Leafs trade Marchment to FLA for Denis Malgin

I don't know much about Malgin, and I know Marchment had his fans from his time with the Marlies, but he flat-out sucked in his 4 games with the Leafs. That's hardly a sample size worth entirely judging a guy by but clearly the Leafs were skeptical about his game translating to the NHL like I was.

Is this the first domino before a massive cascade of moving pieces? Or a fairly inconsequential trade?

Tune in later to find out

These numbers seem to indicate he has pretty good defensive results.

Malgin also showed up last week in @ChartingHockey's list of players who excel at manually tracked stats like shots, shot assists, carry-ins and exits:

So at a time where the Leafs desperately need bottom-6 depth Dubas traded an AHL with a questionable NHL future for a younger player who will likely hit 200 NHL games by the end of the season and has some pretty good numbers in places.

Played on the Zurich Lions with Matthews in 2015/16. Put up 17 points in 28 games on that roster (Matthews 46 in 36)

I don't understand why Florida makes this trade. Malgin is younger and has shown he can be a reasonably effective NHL player. Marchment, on the other hand, seems a like a quality AHL forward, but nothing more.

I'm guessing the Leafs originally tried trading Timashov for this guy in a 4th liner swap. Tallon checked how big Timashov was and said no dice so Dubas had to sort players the other way.

Marchment was credited with just 3 hits in 4 games with the Leafs and I don't think any of them were more than just minor body contract plays. That's what I didn't get about his little audition. All he had to do was connect on one big hit, get gif'd, and he would have become an absolute hero to most of this franchise. You'd think an undrafted player who was absolutely amped to finally break into the NHL at the age of 24 would have played with a little more energy.

In typical Leafs fashion watch Marchment score the genre winning goal for Florida that sends them the playoffs while the Leafs miss
