May I put my .01 or .02 cents in.If the NHL wants to go to the scoring level of the 1980,s,why not shrink the goalie equipment to the size it was back then and make the rest of the players use wooden sticks.

We covered that. The NHL can't unilaterally mandate changes where it affects  player safety. That, as well as the simple reality that goalies have gotten bigger which makes any static limits on goalie equipment unfair, makes it something of a non-starter.

And I don't see why wooden sticks would help.

I don't think the matter is totally dead on goalie equipment. I don't necessary think they'll have significant impact, but it's worth revisiting. They can start with the jerseys and the top extension on the pads. Neither of which have an impact on safety.

I mean, geez, look at the size of the goalies Gretzky was scoring on in these breakaway goal highlights.  They look like midgets.

It looks like they don't know how to play the position. I mean, I knew goalies in the 80s didn't have the butterfly but its just... Bad....

Honestly, anyone who can look at this and then comeback with the "integrity of the game" BS is a joke.

I think you sort of missed the point there slightly. The issue isn't whether or not these changes would actually affect player safety, the issue is that if the NHL wants to make changes to player equipment, the PA says that any change to player equipment is an issue of player safety and as such has to be collectively bargained. So, as an example, when the league in the past has explored making visors mandatory, it's been the PA who've largely objected and the league can't unilaterally implement such a change.

Like Carlton said, the League has been trying to make changes to goalie equipment for the better part of a decade, it's just largely been a dead-end when players get involved. As such, they've had to explore alternatives.
