Can they just release Colton Orr? Maybe someone would take a flyer on him? Just seems a waste to make him a helathy scratch game after game. There seems to be no future in TO for him

My guess is we'll see him on waivers at some point this season, but, no, they can't just release him.

cw has mentioned the possibility of Colton being protected somewhat... he needs 23 more games to see his pension, good chance Burke is having some input there if so.

He's got this season and next to find 23 games to play in, I guess it's doable.  Although given that he's to receive $4 million from the Leafs contract, I don't think he'll be hurting for cash when his career is done.

Betcha McCarty is glad for it...

I theorized that he was being protected due to his injury - and I still feel that way. I wasn't absolutely positive about his pension. With games lost due to injury, he may have enough for a full pension.

He has the rock band Grinder to fall back on.

Correct, due to his injury, didn't mean to get the two things confuzzed.

I haven't been able to find anything to say games lost to injury count towards pension eligibility, fwiw, just downloaded the cba to have a look.

Ha, isn't that what got him into some trouble before?

Hardcore Pawn may have helped him out a bit...

I'm not 100% certain, but, I'm pretty sure the 400 games to qualify for the pension is games on an NHL roster rather than games in an NHL lineup. Things like pensions tend to be related to service time rather than playing time.

From Siegel's five points today:

4. A broken left pinky finger has derailed Steckel's efficiency on the draw. Once atop the league in faceoffs this season, the 29-year-old has fallen to sixth overall at 57 per cent. "Unless you have 4-6 weeks without a game in the season, it's not going to get better that quick," Steckel said. Swollen and without a nail, the finger is without much feeling and a real detriment for one of the NHL's top faceoff men. Steckel is 27-64 (42 per cent) since injuring the finger in Dallas on a blocked Stephane Robidas point shot.

I don't think it's completely unreasonable to suggest that Steckel is in the NHL largely because of his face-off skills. If that skill isn't there right now because of an injury, I'm not sure I want him in the line-up. Let him sit out for a few weeks and give that finger a better chance to heal.

He leads all Leafs forwards in hits and blocked shots. He's still a quality defensive player when he's not winning faceoffs. I'd cut his ice time back to 4th line minutes, but, I wouldn't scratch him.

I haven't been a huge fan of his play outside of the faceoff circle for the majority of the season, although I have to admit there really isn't a stat to back me up on that. I do have to wonder if his injury is effecting the rest of his game though. From the sounds of it, he's really not able to use his left pinky at all. That's got to effect his ability to shoot and pass the puck properly as well. And while he's not exactly using those skills in an offensive manner, he still needs them to clear and dump the puck as hard as he can.

Gustavvson deserves the net, with 6 games left until Christmas, play them till they lose starting with Gus against Car.

I think it's time to mix it up again. Here is what I would like to see experimented with...

Lupul Grabovski Kessel (just try Grabo between them to see what happens)
MacArthur Connolly Frattin (the rookie might benefit from Connolly playmaking)
Kadri (call up) Bozak Kulemin
Crabb Steckel (anyone but Dupuis...when in Brown back?)

Gunner Phaneuf
Liles  Schenn
Gardiner Franson

I'd like to see Aulie get another crack, but not entirely decided on who is weakest link on D?
