Luongo

So basically if Luongo retires early, regardless of if he gets traded or not, Vancouver gets screwed right?

Yes, this is the article I posted yesterday I think. I didn't understand it that well, but I came to the same conclusions you do. Vancouver gets hosed on the deal, but you know, Gillis might keep him, he doesn't mind.

Ahh apologies, should have read back further.  Still getting used to the board being really active again!

Vancouver is running into injury problems now, and if anyone else goes down Gillis might come crawling back to Nonis and beg him to make whatever deal he sees fit to make. 8)

I'd rather Nonis go another route at this moment.  Be it Bernier or sticking with our own unproven goalies, let Vancouver sweat it out.  Hopefully it blows up in their faces.

Yeah. I don't know. I still see a glaring need for a veteran presence in net on this team. The pair they have now just feels like a melt down waiting to happen. *hope I'm wrong*

Im totally with this

...and what happens if Reimer and Scrivens falter out of the gate and the "fans" start chanting "LOUUUUUU!"? Then Gillis has all the leverage.

The window is starting to close on that team.  Both Sedins are 32, Kesler is injury prone now.  Hopefully the smug attitude of Vancouver fans is replaced with desperation and pain in the coming years.  Let them share a bit of what Leafs Nation has to endure.  ;)

Patience might be a virtue here.

Problem in today's NHL is, how many "big name" players get to free agency any longer?  Every time we talk about some player becoming available in free agency, they re-up with their current team for a gazillion years.  Also some of the guys on that list are getting up there in age.

Of the players on that list, I see one of Halak or Elliot making it to free agency (barring a trade which is also possible).  I'd want Halak personally, but I think St.Louis will re-sign him and deal Elliot.

Meh.  To me thats a pretty crappy list.

This summers UFA's are quite old (other than Smith)... and if we didnt want Vokoun for a song this last summer, I doubt we'd want any of these guys either.  Smith is a product of the system, don't want that.

Next summers are obviously better but Lundqvist is going nowhere, Vokoun and Kipper will be ancient, and no way I'd want Elliott.  Miller probably stays in Buffalo also.

It's Hiller or Halak really....  I'd definitely like either one but the chances are very slim.

That's the thing, there's no way Leafs can rely on free agency.  See how well that worked out in trying to get the Sedins before their breakout year.  I think it'll have to be through a trade, or hope that one of our own develops.

What's the deal with Thomas this year? Is he retired or is he just sitting out?

I just found this actually:

http://bostinno.com/2013/01/15/tim-thomas-wants-to-play-next-year-should-the-bruins-let-him/

It's kind of a funny article, I like the slant they took here:

Thomas changed his phone number and is making himself unavailable to Tuukka Rask, who will be filling Thomas? skates on a full-time basis.

?Rask said that he wanted to give Thomas a call recently, but when he tried the number he had registered for the former other half of the tandem, he found it didn?t work anymore,? the site recently revealed.

They make it sound like he changed his number specifically to avoid Rask... which is funny.

Man, if by some miracle Lundqvist makes it to free agency . . .

How are the Rangers looking cap-wise by then? Since it's going down...

Rangers will have 12 players headed to UFA that summer of Lundqvist.  They'll have the room to open the vault for him, which is what they should do.

A little tight until the summer Lundqvist's contract runs out - but, at the same time, at that point, only 3 current players will be under contract for more than $18M against the cap.

They're set up pretty well for it - Gaborik, Callahan and a bunch of others become UFAs at the same time.
