Marincin on waivers

And while I doubt it happens because I think the Leafs like McBackup, Calvin Pickard would likely be an upgrade on our back-up goalie position.

All reports have talked about how he is a confidence player in a big way, perhaps this is an attempt to let him find his game and confidence before he gets another look?

Meh. He was basically the perfect #7 defenceman. I don't get this unless Marincin/his agent asked for it.

I wonder about that as well. Considering the timeing, a request from the Marincin camp does feel like the most likely scenario. Also a slim possibility it could be an indication that a trade is close, but the other team doesn't want to take Marincin in return - which would be the case if the Leafs are picking up a D from Vegas.

Or they decided to sign Polak or save some Cap (If he clears his cap hit is 225k)

I think the only reason he remained up with the club was because they were trying to trade him before waiving him.  Since nobody bit, down he goes.

I suspect Rosen gets the callup and will likely rotate with Borg and/or Carrick.

One Martin down, one to go. ;)

Not sure how this plays out. Who's going to sit in the press box now? I rather Rosen play everyday for the Marlies instead of sitting and watching the Leafs play. Polak is a decent guess? Levio for a Vegas D man? No idea.

Assuming there's no signing or trade Babs would have to rotate Rosen and Borgman and maybe even Carrick on a regular basis. You can't have any of those guys sitting in the pressbox for weeks at a time.

I wonder if putting him on Waivers now is just for future flexibility.  ie, starting tomorrow at noon he's still on the roster BUT if someone else comes on waivers they like more or a trade presents itself that doesn't have a roster player going back, he can be assigned to the AHL immediately and the transaction is not held up.

Yeah, probably a flexibility move. Man, if Martin could ever get some consistency going in his career, 6'5 230lbs that can pass and skate...

I was thinking about this in the preseason, but it didn't occur to me to apply it to this scenario. Mirtle's theory is that Marincin technically didn't make the team, but his higher cap hit (and Fehr's) were helpful in getting us right up against the Cap when applying Lupul's LTIR.

This makes sense to me.

I was wondering why Marincin didn't play in one of the back-to-back
preseason ending games.  He was the only one of the top 25 or so
that didn't play in one of those games.  I was actually surprised he 'made' it after that.

Sounds like he was cut in Babcock's mind a long time ago.

He's such a frustrating player. He has all the tools to be good but makes that one gaffe that basically costs the team.

Its interesting because he's pretty much the exact opposite of Jake.  Jake drove play almost entirely by getting the puck and making things develop offensively with controlled exits/entries.  He was never bad defensively, but that one gaffe per game (defensively) always seemed to stick out like a sore thumb.  Recently, those gaffe's have become minimal- he's improved defensively to the point where he should be considered a #1 defenseman but isn't yet because of the baggage he's carrying and the Leafs trying to make Rielly the #1 d-man over the past few years.

Marincin's talents were almost entirely defensive... stopping the puck from entering the zone and doing it so well that his lack of offense was acceptable.  Marincin's gaffes were almost always with the puck on his stick.  He threw it away enough that you'd notice the gaffes with it that ended up in the back of the net.  But both were effective.

The main problem with Marincin is developing puck skills, patience, etc is a whole lot harder than improving defensively like Jake did.  Furthermore, the Leafs style of play (and where the NHL is going in general) fits in perfectly with Jake's game... and doesn't with Marincin's.

The only reason I'd keep Marincin around is I don't really want Rosen or Dermott sitting in the press box to be the 7th defenseman.  If they aren't playing with the Leafs regularily, they should be playing big minutes with the Marlies.
