Marleau traded to Carolina

A 2020 first round pick is going with him.

Lose next years first but frees up $6.5M and more importantly a PP slot for a deserving player.

Leafs trade Marleau, a conditional 1st round in 2020, a 7th in 2020 and take back a 6th from Carolina in 2020.

The conditional first in 2020 is top ten protected. If it is a top 10 pick then it becomes their first round in 2021.

I think that is a fantastic deal. We lose a pick that might never play and probably 3 or 4 years away at best. Better than losing roster players.

This was unexpected. At least the pick is top 10 protected in case things go off the rails. See Brian Burke.

Hopefully the pick is #31 :)

Great, two years in a row without a first round pick. This is pretty shit.

I guess it will all even out when the Leafs re-coup 4-1st round picks for Marner.

That's a shit load to give up for one year of Marleau. Jesus.

I could not agree more. This is a stupid, stupid trade. I would have thrown in no higher than a 2nd rounder and more likely two third round picks over two years or I would have kept him.

Why couldn't we take a younger (i.e., some one signed to a contract under age 35) player back as part of a salary dump by some team and then just buy the guy and or waive him to the AHL?

You know Dubas just Can't do a deal on his own right? We needed that Cap Space and a deal might not work after July 1st.

Uh, well so far that roster has not won us a single round of playoff games -- not one round -- so just maybe we are over valuing our roster players.

From the sounds of things, Dubas has been talking to a lot of teams.  If there was a better deal out there for Marleau, I find it hard to believe he simply overlooked it.

And that draft pick has not played and might not ever play one NHL game. You know that money is possibly needed for Marner as well right?
