Marleau traded to Carolina

I think that is a fantastic deal. We lose a pick that might never play and probably 3 or 4 years away at best. Better than losing roster players.

Uh, well so far that roster has not won us a single round of playoff games -- not one round -- so just maybe we are over valuing our roster players.

Or maybe there?s a lot of luck in playoff hockey.

That's a shit load to give up for one year of Marleau. Jesus.

I could not agree more. This is a stupid, stupid trade. I would have thrown in no higher than a 2nd rounder and more likely two third round picks over two years or I would have kept him.

Why couldn't we take a younger (i.e., some one signed to a contract under age 35) player back as part of a salary dump by some team and then just buy the guy and or waive him to the AHL?

From the sounds of things, Dubas has been talking to a lot of teams.  If there was a better deal out there for Marleau, I find it hard to believe he simply overlooked it.

You might think that but after not covering himself with glory on the Nylander negotiations, opting for Sparks over McElhinney and then extending Sparks and doing so after a less than adequate 2018-19 performance, I have my doubts.

Too bad, I had high hopes for Dubas but he has misspent my confidence in him.

Dubas has made a few moves that should be placed in the "not good" category now. Not a great sign in his first year on the job.

At least he didn't sign an aging star to a big contact that's one year too long. Save that bad move for the veterans.

Yes the crap Dubas is trying to undo now is all Lou.

Yeah, I think this little move takes a bit of luster off the boy wonder.

Unless ... there's an agreement in place for a separate deal for more from Carolina.

Why would Marleau accept a trade to Carolina when by all accounts he wanted back West.

Something's fishy here.  At least I hope it is.

He agreed cause they agreed to buy him out. Now he asks sj for a one year deal at a rock bottom price.

Of course.  Didn't see the buyout part.  Thanks.

The cap space is worth more than next year?s 25th+ pick (which Subas would?ve just converted to second rounders anyway).

That late first rounder would be 3 years away from contributing, while the Leafs want to contend now during the Tavares window. The space allows us to keep Johnsson or Kapanen who are already better than any late first rounder right now and for the next 2 years minimum.

Surprised Carolina did this before at least some of the bonus was paid out.

That would have ended the buyout possibility and doubt Marleau then accepts the trade.

Mmmm our prospect pool isn't THAT deep that we can punt 2 years in a row on 1sts.  You kind of have to take Sluggo's point here: this team hasn't even won a playoff round, let alone really challenged for the Cup.

Good luck to Dubas with his dearly bought cap space but I think they are a bit farther away.

What KW said and this Marleau trade.

I mean, I'd add his tactics signing the big 3 off their RFA contracts has been mismanaged as well but we're not privy to the details of that.

Our top two lines are kinda set for as long as we want. We need to keep stocking the cupboards but losing that 1st for the Cap Space in the right move.

OTOH maybe they have done their sums and realize that they are going to have to paypaypay Mitch.  So I guess it might be that the 2020 1st is the cost of retaining Marner.

Ah, so it was a first to take him and buy him out.  That makes a bit more sense.  Carolina is stuck with the full cap hit and no player to show for it.

There is a tendency to severely overvalue the late first round pick when you already have a very young core locked in. Prospect pipeline is important but they are built from far more sources than just the first round of the draft.
