Bob says Matthews deal is "imminent":

Seems fair enough. Matthews gets the team's highest AAV, which maybe softens the blow if Tavares is named captain, and five years is long enough for the team's purposes and sets the stage for his next big raise.

11.5 @ 5 years seems kind of high to me.
No it doesn't He's the teams best and most important player moving forward. Would like to see a 6 year deal tho so his would expire with JT's. Marner's can't be the same length. Need to avoid this scenario again.

5 years doesn't bother me in the slightest bit. Anybody worrying that this means he's going to bolt once he hits UFA status needs to take a chill pill. I've said this before but 5 years is an incredibly common term for superstar players to take after their ELCs. Kane, Toews, Malkin, Benn, Crosby, Stamkos, Getzlaf, and Perry all went that route and they all re-signed with their teams. As long as the Leafs are still competitive after the contract, there's literally zero reason to think that he'll bolt.

If that cap hit is accurate, well it's slightly more than I would have liked at 5 years but at the end of the day Matthews is a top-10 player in the league and rules about RFA discounts or buying UFA years don't really apply to him. He gets what he deserves regardless of those things.

In terms of cap percentage this would be midway between the 2nd contracts for the Blackhawks guys and Crosby's second deal. That seems about right.

Midway between the Blackhawks and Malkin's deal, Crosby's was way way ahead:

Kane/Toews: 11.09
Matthews: 13.8
Malkin: 15.34
Crosby: 17.30

I think anything less than 8 years is a loss, so needless to say I think the Leafs are getting screwed if it's for 5 years.

If it's 8 years, Leafs will have to pay him 13+ million. They can't do that and afford to keep "all" the pieces. 5 years is not a big deal.

I wouldn't pay him that much over 8 years either.

5 years at 11.5, the same time Nylander's contract expires and a year before Tavares's contract comes off the books.  I personally don't think that's an ideal situation.

Spotted another guy in the 5-year club: Rick Nash. He signed a 5-year deal after his ELC with an AAV of $5.4mil. At the time that represented 13.85% of the salary cap, so pretty much exactly what Matthews will reportedly end up with. And while he ended up leaving Columbus eventually he too re-signed with the Blue Jackets with an 8-year contract and that deal was finalized a year before he was to become an UFA.

14 isn't midway between 11 and 17?

At first glance I just assumed using Malkin's midway made more sense but yeah. Not like there's much of a difference either way:

Midway of Crosby/Kane is 14.195, or 0.395 higher than Matthews.
Midway of Malkin/Kane is 13.215, or 0.585 lower than Matthews.

Like you said, Matthews' % seems about right.

What? I thought it was common knowledge he was going to sign a huge offer sheet from the 'Yotes. ;D

Glad it's done. Would have preferred more years or a lower cap, but, this is very much in line with his value, so, no complaints.

I mean I see they got a "34" in the cap hit with 11.634, but wouldn't have 11.34 made more sense? lol
