Matthews signs 5 year contract, $11.634mil AAV

At first glance I just assumed using Malkin's midway made more sense but yeah. Not like there's much of a difference either way:

Midway of Crosby/Kane is 14.195, or 0.395 higher than Matthews.
Midway of Malkin/Kane is 13.215, or 0.585 lower than Matthews.

Like you said, Matthews' % seems about right.

So assuming the cap is 83 next year this will be almost exactly 14%

Glad the Leafs don't have to go through a Nylander situation with Matthews, and it's a deal they had to sign if Matthews was adamant on a shorter term.  Still believe the Leafs come out on the losing end on this deal.

In what way?

There's very little in this world quite as on-brand for Leafs fans than describing signing the best young player the team has had in 30 years to a reasonable long term deal as a "loss" because it could have been slightly more advantageous for the team.

Man just think about how much trade value Matthews will have once we pay his signing bonus after July 1st of his 5th year.

That's when the Coyotes will be really interested.

I'd be perfectly content with 11.634 over 8 years.  5 years?  Nah.

Maybe, but I just can't see Matthews' signing a long-term deal to spend so much of his career in Houston. ;)

EDIT: Dammit, Carlton.

The Oilers signed McDavid for 8 years and a cap hit of 866k more than Matthews. Would you trade Matthews for McDavid?  I would, and you'd have him for more years.

But you're not getting him at that hit for 8 years. Wishful thinking is one thing but reality is to buy up UFA years, it costs large. 13.5 to 14 mill was the going rate for an 8 year deal.

Sure.  And even that ask would have been ludicrous.  I just don't think that he is worth that much in any way it wants to be passed off.  But he's signed, so whatever.

But why?  How are other teams able to get 8 year terms on their star players?  Hell Eichel took 8x10, McDavid I already pointed out.  I'm fine with the number, it's the years that's disappointing.  Matthews has no Art Ross or Hart trophies to his name last I checked, why is he worth as much or more than McDavid over 8 years?

The sad fact is, rather than the Leafs getting any sort of "discount" to keep a great group of players together, it seems Leafs have to pay a premium.  No other way to spin this deal.  It's too short a term for the money he signed at.

I don't want to speak for others who may also be disappointed with the deal, but I really don't think it's the dollar value that is the sticking point.

That's exactly what I'm saying.  I'm fine with the cap hit, it's the 5 years that's the problem.  This should have been 7 years minimum at that hit.
