Tavares signed for 8 years. If you really thought that Matthews and Marner were going to sign for 8 then you have not been paying attention very well.
But sure, sign them to 8 years and never build a team around them.

I'm glad it's done, but I would have expected about $500K less for a 5 year term, given it walks him into UFA.
It's nothing that's going to change the dynamic of the team or anything, so really I'm just glad it's a longish term deal, and it seems to have been done without any drama.
