McElhinney and Pickard both claimed off waivers

Philly and Carolina are both dealing with some injury concerns. I wouldn't be surprised if both goalies ended up back on waivers in the next month and the Leafs could get a chance to re-claim them if that happens.

We'll see what happens. Definitely a big blow to the Marlies' goaltending though.

Not just the Marlies. If Sparks doesn't do well, we're screwed because Freddie will be playing All the games. This is a huge hit to our goaltender depth.

Kaskisuo and McAdam are the Marlies goalies then?

Or do the Leafs claim someone else?

They have Justin Peters as a try-out at their camp right now, but his numbers in Europe have been pretty mediocre the past couple of years.

I actually thought this would happen. I guess it's sink-or-swim time for Kaskisuo.

I have to imagine the Leafs will try to bring in another goaltender.

I wonder if Steve Mason would have any interest in signing a NHL deal and playing with the Marlies. He hasn't found a NHL team yet, and after these claims it's incredibly unlikely that happens anywhere. GTA guy, only a few years removed from pretty good numbers in Philly.

McElhinney really, really hurts. He was absolutely fantastic for us. I just don't see how we're going to have a better team next year then we do now after everyone signs. We cannot afford this roster next year. We should have stuck with the sure thing, today.

If this is legitimately a problem it can probably be solved with the pick we just got from Dallas.

A career journeyman back-up who put up his best numbers as a 34-year old is pretty much the furthest thing from a "sure thing".

From my perspective, I have to think that Sparks would have been taken, then there'd be a fair bit of criticism of letting go the AHL goalie of the year for a 35 year old who'll likely see his numbers normalize this season.

Yes it had to be Sparks, he earned it last year, you can't base his taking the spot with two bad preseason games, even Babs said so.

Exactly.  No way Sparks doesn't get claimed by either of these teams with goaltender injuries.

Sucks that the Marlies lose their goaltending depth, but the one benefit to this is say Sparks isn't stellar during his first two starts, Babcock can't go to Dubas and say "I want Mac back".  I don't want a two game sample making that decision.

We need to keep in mind that we could get both back through waivers as the Leafs have first crack at them. Both Carolina and Philly have goaltender injuries right now so....
