McElhinney and Pickard both claimed off waivers

So what's the issue here? The team decided Sparks is best for the backup job, waivers exist and we all knew that...what can/should/could have been done?

Don't really think there's an issue as it's apparent the Leafs were destined to lose 2 of the 3 goalies.  It's a matter of did the Leafs pick the right guy?  Would have been nice to have 1 clear waivers just in case the chosen one faltered.  Hopefully Sparks proves Dubas right to benefit the Leafs.
Agreed. Time will tell. I don't think it was that hard of a decision to be honest. I kind of hope we can get Pickard back after Philly's goalies come back from injury.

Sparks's first game will be Sunday, let's hope it's a win!

Well run teams have too many usable players. Losing them on waivers is a badge of excellence.

As long as the correct decision is made from an asset management perspective, yes.

ie. losing Sparks and Pickard to waivers to keep Mac would not have earned the org. a badge of excellence.

I'll just add that I don't think that this has been proven to be a good decision yet.  I agree in that I think they made the right call, but we could be proven wrong here.

No real issue. I think some (me included) was hoping that Pickard would at least make it through. I was positive McElhinney was going to get picked.

I am not happy with McBackup going. Age for goalies, is a different thing. Hasek wasnt any good until his 30 ies.

He won a Vezina in his 20's.

Fine he was 29

Also, being the greatest goalie of all time, he's maybe not representative of a typical progression. He wasn't in the League until he was 26 because of communism.

For one thing Martin was the best goalie of all time. IMO Mcbackup is going to be a mistake. AHL is the minors so I am expecting the worst from Sparks.

Hasek won more Vezinas, more Hart Trophies, more Lindsays, more first team all-stars, had a career save percentage 12 points higher, won a higher percentage of his games, had a higher save percentage in the playoffs and had a lower goals against average.

But yeah, other than that...

More wins
More shut outs

And Brodeur was in a pizza commercial with Luc Robitaille.  Q.E.D.

Hasek also is probably nowhere near as attentive a brother-in-law.

Ottawa radio has a habit of trolling the opposing teams when they come in to play the Sens in the playoffs.  Not sure I agree with the approach, but some of them are funny.  One of the best was the spin on the "Our City, Our Team, Our Time" slogan when the Devils were in town.

"Our City, Our Team, Your Sister".

Roy was the 2nd best goalie of all time.
That's debatable. Can't really compare from different eras. Sawchuk is a tough one to beat tho.
I would agree that both Hasek and Roy were better then Martin B..
