Muzzin extension (4 years, $5.625M per)

Seems like a bit of an overpay but whatever. I thought closer to 5.25

I mean Tyler Myers got 5 years at $6mil. I don't absolutely love the deal but I think he could have definitely gotten more on July 1st.

Not amazing, not bad either.  The only problem is we really don't have cost effective players very much at this point.

It's fair to not like the deal but anyone doing so on the basis that you could get a better defenseman at the same or lower cost would have to show their work.

If the Leafs get another lefty to play his minutes by this time next year then Seattle can have him. I don't think that's going to happen, I like Muzz, but it's an option.

And that is perfectly fair.  I don't see how you do anything else.  We aren't going to magically find a guy like Muzzin for less than this contract.  It would be nice if we got him at a steal instead of a fair market price.

Front loaded and lots of signing bonuses so dealing him down the line might be easy.

I know people hate listening to me on this front but they are getting them at a discount. The cap doesn't just magically change economic reality.

Fair deal. A comparable D man would probably cost more then that. Muzz is just behind Rielly in ESP/60. Dubas will have to get that RHD in the off season.

Yeah. Muzzin probably gets $6M+ on the open market.

Glad Muzzin signed.  He brings guidance & veteran experience and presence to a young club.  Whatever happens later (Seattle expansion draft, etc.) will remain to be seen.

Sure but I'm referring to the fact that there is a separate economic reality that the Leafs exist in that is independent from the "market" a salary cap creates.

So keeping Muzzin, on a reasonable contract, makes sense, in a vacuum. He?s a good player, and he won?t be easy to replace without overpaying in free agency or giving up good players in a trade. At the right number, he?s better than the alternatives.

But this situation also clearly indicates there are more moves to come. This blue line needs to grow beyond the status quo, and a Muzzin contract isn?t going to be what gets them there.

Plus some flexibility here:

Myers in his contract year: 31 points in 80 games (.39 pts/g)
Muzzin in his contract year: 22 points in 52 games (.42 pts/g)

40 point seasons for Myers: 1
40 point seasons for Muzzin: 3

Myers hits per game last 3 years: 3.19
Muzzin hits per game last 3 years: 6.08

Myers PK minutes per game last 3 years: 2:10
Muzzin PK minutes per game last 3 years: 2:10

Of course Stanley Cup's go 1-0 in Muzzin's favour too. These stats don't 100% reflect how good a defenceman is of course but they're what comes up in contract negotiations. Muzzin definitely gets $6mil on July 1st if he gets there. He would have been the best left-handed defenceman available, 2nd best overall to Pietrangelo who might not get to that point.

I wouldn't be surprised if any UFA deal he would have signed might be pushing for an extra year, too...I certainly wouldn't have been shocked to see someone give him $6M x5 on July 1st.

Good deal ? if they are willing to let him go to the Kraken or trade him if things are stagnating the next couple of years.  He does bring several things this team is desperately short of.

On the other side of the ledger, he's not really all that great most of the time.

I'd feel better about the day if Dubas had at least gotten rid of Barrie.  But he couldn't even manage to do that.
