The league is starting to announce the finalists for this years awards. First up were the Vezina finalists:

Rinne should win this in a landslide. It's a little disappointing that 3 of the top-4 goalies in Sv% didn't get noms... particularly Fleury and Gibson.

Vasilevskiy finished 9th in Sv% and only had a .912 save percentage since December 8th... it's like everybody pencilled him in after November and forgot that pencil can be erased.

Also I know there was no way he'd get nominated for this but I don't think people are appreciating how good Antti Raanta was this season. Dude led the league with a .930 save percentage in 47 games. And since January 1st he went 16-6-4 with a .942 save percentage. With friggin' Arizona!

"If a Coyotes goalie has a good second half..." would make for the beginning a killer Zen Koan.

Kinda hard to understand why Raanta would sign an extension after the deadline when he was heading for UFA with this season's numbers in his back pocket??  Guess he likes the Climate in AZ.

With the caveat that I don't know what the goaltending market will be like I find it hard to imagine a scenario where he would have done much better as a UFA as a 28 year old who's never cracked 50 games in a season.

He could have probably gotten 5 years, $25 million. Give or take.

There is that of course, it's just surprising his agent wouldn't have taken it another couple months to find out.  Then again maybe he knew this was as good as it gets.

Well, and sometimes I'm sure that 12 million in the hand is worth 25 million in the bush.

By the by it's Doughty, Hedman and PK for the Norris. Bergeron, Couturier and Kopitar for the Selke.

This is a weird year where I don't think any defenceman particularly dominated. None of the top-4 scoring defencemen are nominated, which is actually probably fair. I'm a little surprised to see Subban there even though I think he deserves it, but most writers still seem to think Josi is Nashville's best defenceman from what I've seen/read. I'm gonna go ahead and assume that it's Hedman's turn this year.

Yeah. I think in years where there isn't a clear cut winner or someone with a particularly compelling narrative reason to win it they retreat a little and just tend to nominate a fairly unassailable group of safe choices. Subtract Hedman and add Karlsson and that could be the list of nominees for any of the last five years.

McDavid gets the Lindsay nom, but not the Hart. Kopitar takes his spot there alongside Hall and MacKinnon. Kucherov gets shutout.

Honestly they're all dumb awards.

Sure but after watching this team all year I at least feel like I have some idea about who is, say, the best defenseman. I couldn't tell you for the life of me who the most Gentlemanly of the four Leafs who got Byng votes was.

Also, Zach Hyman with a 4th and a 5th place Selke vote.
