Waiting for someone here to confirm, but it seems legit. Also unknown if he'll be starting in the NHL or AHL.

Here's that article translated by Google:

William Nylander leave MODO Hockey with immediate effect when the Toronto Maple Leafs, who Nylander has contracts with, decided to withdraw the striker. "It is unfortunately beyond our control when the rules of the transitions are written in this way," says MODO Hockey GM Per Svartvadet.
William Nylander has current contract with the NHL club Toronto Maple Leafs, who have chosen to withdraw striker before the deadline for transitions in terms of loan players. Nylander leave MODO Hockey with immediate effect.
- This is unfortunately beyond our control when the rules of the transitions are written in this way, says MODO Hockey GM Per Svartvadet and concludes:
- We are extremely proud and happy that we helped William to the player he now is, which shows that we MODO Hockey is working properly. Of course, we have done what we could to keep him in the organization since it is a skilled player, but this issue is controlled by SHL Agreement. We wish William luck in their future career.
William Nylander played 21 games for MODO Hockey 2014-2015 and accounted for 20 points (8 + 12).

It's okay, MODO, you don't have to apologize to me.

Very interesting. Very curious to see what the intent behind this is.

They're dead last in the SHL and recently fired their head coach. They've lost 7 straight and 10 of their past 11 games. Have to imagine that played a big role.

I wonder if a trade is coming. Really do see where we need a center unless we have an injury!

Even if he plays for the Leafs (probably safe to assume he's at least starting with the Marlies), he'll likely begin his NHL career on the wing. Tough to play the centre position in the NHL as an 18-year old. Even guys like Seguin and MacKinnon didn't do that.

No, he wouldn't. As an U20 player he can play in the AHL without burning a year off his contract. He could technically play all of next season in the AHL too and his contract would still slide.

You are probably correct, but with all the trade speculation around you might want to think about. Maybe not seriously, but at least a thought.

Modo only has 18 games left on their season, and obviously playoffs won't be happening for them. The Marlies have 38 games left, and are just 2 points out of a playoff spot. They could desperately use a guy like Nylander too as their centre depth has been awful all season long, especially with Smith/McKegg/Carrick being used on the Leafs. They've had to rely on an ECHL player to fill their 2C spot for most of the season.

They also have Swedes like Loov and Granberg (Nylander and Loov were teammates on Modo last season) so they could help ease the transition for Nylander, although it's not like he's unfamiliar with North America growing up here.

I really don't see the urgency to bring him back to NA, only to have him suit up for the Marlies the rest of the way. He's coming back to play with the big club, at least at some point this season. Or, like someone has already speculated, there is a trade in the works.

Kadri for E. Staal?

they probably just want a closer look at him for the rest of this year and its just easier if hes playing in toronto on either squad than overseas.

they are in full on "see what we have" mode for the rest of this year.

thats my guess. (but secretly I hope there is a huge trade coming lol)

I wish they would just let him play the final 18 games and then bring him over. It's impossible to understand or comprehend any decisions the Leafs have made over the past decade.

Like Connor Brown, plan with William Nylander is not to recall him to the NHL this season, regardless of injuries to Leafs.

Both Cox and McKenzie are saying he'll be with the Marlies. I think that's the right call.

Thanks.  I thought there was something with being under 20 and from Europe.

You even outscooped McKenzie:

@TSNBobMcKenzie

It's my understanding 2 reasons for move: 1. TOR wants him playing on smaller ice. 2. Situation in MoDo (coach fired recently) wasn't ideal.

I like the move.  He has clearly shown an ability to excel in the SEL.  He excelled in the World Juniors.  Time for the next challenge.  Helps the Marlies make the playoffs and will be a big litmus test for whether he can play in the NHL next year.

Leafs play game 43 tonight. Thereafter, Nylander can be on the roster for the rest of the year + not accrue a season:

That being said, I think CtB is correct. Bad juju on MODO + desperate need on Marlies = Nylander on the Marlies to get a headstart on re-acclimatization + potential call up for NHL time without accruing a season.
