Official Ottawa Senators Thread

While I wouldn't be a huge advocate of the Leafs trying to get him(not that I think Melnyk would sign off on it regardless) I do think it'll be interesting to see how this trade shakes out. It could be one of those very rare instances where a guy who is a bonafide #1 center could be had on the relative cheap. I don't think an extension would be part of the deal so it seems unlikely that Ottawa could demand a lot for a 30 year old coming off a so-so season, a history of injury problems and who has one expensive year left on his deal.

On the other hand, it wouldn't surprise me to see Spezza have a couple of 80+ point seasons left in him if he found the right home so he could be a pretty valuable acquisition. A team like the Rangers might be a pretty good fit if they bought out Brad Richards.

I hope the Sens trade Spezza for a poor return and they aren't able to re-sign Bobby Ryan after keeping him past the deadline this season.

The talk is that the sens want the return on Spezza to be similar to what they gave up for Ryan - so, a young roster player with top 6 potential, a quality prospect and a 1st round pick - but that GMs around the league don't expect they'll be able to get that kind of return. Spezza's injury issues, contract situation and the fact that he asked out all hurt Ottawa's bargaining position, as do Spezza's NTC, the fact that's he's on the wrong side of 30 and the other names on the market. I wouldn't expect a spectacular return for him. That being said, a sens team that could lose Spezza and Michalek this off-season could very well be one that finds itself drafting in the top 5 in 2015 - so, even if they return isn't great, it could be a nice step in the beginning of a rebuild for the team.

Real_ESPNLeBrun: Sens GM Bryan Murray says he had a deal that made sense potentially with Nashville for Spezza but Spezza wouldn't waive to go there

Spezza with Neal, Weber, and Rinne would have been interesting. I'm a little surprised at how choosy Spezza is being, especially since he only has 1 year left on his contract.

No kidding. There's no turning back now - it will be a huge sideshow if he's still in a Sens jersey come training camp. The last of us who defended him throughout his tenure here have probably turned their backs to him now - I know I have. This also really crushes any leverage Murray might have had in this process. Up yours Spezza!

SunGarrioch: Milan Michalek has agreed to a three-year extension at $4 million per-season. #Sens

Unless he absolutely lives beaver tails, not sure why he would re-sign there.

Nobody else was willing to offer him three years and 12 million dollars?

Maybe, but I find it hard to believe money-bags Melnyk outspent other teams. And while I ragged on him a few days ago, I don't think 3 years/$4mil is out of line for what he brings.

Maybe he just didn't want to move. That's a big factor for some guys.

Sure. I wonder if maybe what we'll see this year is that guys are aware of what happened to guys like Grabo last year and we'll see some of the lower tier guys sign early so as not to be the guys without a chair when the music stops. I don't think, for instance, that Michalek would have been high on too many people's lists today.

Sad news for Sens fans alright, but, according to the media, Murray did not look too good recently (thought I noticed that on t.v. as well, or at least it seemed that way).

Wishing him all the best in conquering the disease on the road to better health.

Don't know if this has been mentioned elsewhere here yet but this article gave me a laugh...

Standing sections are quite common across rinks in Europe. I regularly stand at games I go to in Berlin on the "fankurve". They have a few guys in among there with drums etc who orchestrate the crowd. The atmosphere is incredible.

I don't think it will work in Ottawa (or north america at all really). It's a different demographic who attend games from my experience.

It seems like cramming it in the upper bowl is pretty much an acknowledgement that it isn't likely to be all that effective.
