As cool as that is how cool would it be if it turns out he's not retiring and rejoins the team?

Geuss who is going to the game?

Boooooooooooooooooooo!

Sorry, old habits die hard. Great, classy move by the Sens.

He made a hockey play, he finished his check -- unfortunately, I was injured on the play -- and they scored the winning goal.

Does this finally put the whole hit debate to bed?

At least one of them finally took the high road.

Not when you take the quote out of context like that and leave this part out:
http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL/Ottawa/2014/12/03/22111541.html
"There was criticism that it was a hit from behind, but I'll leave that for others to debate."

And at the time:
http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/tucker-out-no-suspension-for-alfredsson-1.318739
"I think given the fact that there was no penalty call, lead me to believe they (the NHL) would examine it -- and the replay that's the defining factor that showed it was a hit from behind.

"But that's the way things are going right now."

Here's the whole quote:

Back in Game 5 of the 2002 playoffs, Alfredsson slammed me into the boards late in the third with the score tied 2-2. While I separated my shoulder on the play and no penalty was called, Alfredsson kept going and, seconds later, scored the game-winning goal.

There was criticism that it was a hit from behind, but I'll leave that for others to debate.

Listen, at the end of the day, the bottom line was that Daniel is trying to help his hockey club win the series and I'm trying to help my hockey club win the series. I didn't have the best reputation with the referees. And, basically, that's what it came down to. He made a hockey play, he finished his check -- unfortunately, I was injured on the play -- and they scored the winning goal.

The way I interpret it is he's basically saying "I made a career out of throwing those kind of borderline hits and live by the sword die by the sword." Specifically the comment about not having a good reputation with the referees.

The Sens teams of those years were always being lauded for not having enough grit / heart and too many Europeans. I'm pretty sure if Alfie & Tucker switched roles on that play that's exactly what Sens fans would of heard - something about Tucker being grittier and wanting it more because he was Canadian.

I think that "And, basically, that's what it came down to." after that comment suggests he thought it should have been called but wasn't because of his reputation. It absolutely should have been called a penalty regardless of who it was being hit. I don't  how anyone can look at the video and NOT see a clear boarding and/or hitting from behind infraction.

Why would they be lauded for that?

I'm pretty sure if Alfie & Tucker switched roles on that play, sens fans would consider it the dirtiest hit ever made in the history of hockey by the dirtiest team ever to play hockey.

Alfie finally admits to one of his less-endearing moments... intentionally firing a slapshot at Neidermayer.

http://www.tsn.ca/talent/mendes-alfredsson-admits-to-shooting-puck-at-niedermayer-in-2007-stanley-cup-1.151929

I don't care what anyone says about his controversial moments, my take on them:

1.  The Tucker hit - game winning goal:  100% it was a hit from behind/boarding and should have been penalized- deserved 5 mins but even if they just gave him 2 min at least they wouldn't have missed the call completely.  I don't think a suspension or anything else was warranted. He got away with it because of the reputation of the two players involved.

2.  The mock stick toss:  I thought it was hilarious.

3.  Firing the puck at Neidermayer:  I think above all, this was his worst moment.  Complete lack of class from someone who has been a very classy player through most of his career.

I spent the years 2000 - 2009 living in Ottawa as a Leaf fan... up until the lockout, it was a fantastic time :)  I have to say, the 2007 Stanley Cup Run was fun to watch and I wouldn't have been too upset had the Sens won (except for a few very annoying Sens fans I would have had to hear it from for a long time), but I could never cheer for them to win.

Breaking: The Ottawa Senators have dismissed head coach Paul MacLean. #Sens

I find this news surprising.

So do I. It's not like the sens are really under performing in relation to their talent level. They're right around where most expected them to be.

I wasn't paying close attention to it but it seemed like there were stories coming out of him blaming the players and the GM for their woes ..i was surprised when i first heard talk that he might be let go last week..anyway..kind of funny that he gets fired after a win
