Official Ottawa Senators Thread

Sounds like there's a chance Alfie could be back for this weekends games <@ Buff Friday @ Toronto Saturday>...I hope so I'm going to both!

11-11-11

You know, while the topic of back-up goalies is hot right now, you know who's made a career of being an excellent back-up? Alex Auld, that's who. Career .904% PCT and hasn't always been on top NHL teams.

There is no doubt in my mind he is the third-best-second-best-goalie out there.

3-2 Rags final, couple of terrible blunders killed us but that's the way it goes. Gaborik played great for NYR .
Couple of NE battles next on the plate.

Hey SP if you're watching the games this weekend and we score look for 3 dudes in Sens jerseys whooping it up. Our seats at the Sabres game are right on the blueline...can't remember where we're sitting on Saturday at the ACC.

What a road trip. The Sabre game was a disaster but the fans were pretty gentle with us all things considered. We were 3 rows up from the glass at the blueline - maybe the area was safer...that's one load barn also. That's the second time I've gone to Buffalo for a Sens game and both times have been great - definitely worth the trip.
Leaf game was obviously fantastic. The Leaf fans in the seats around us <purples> were class acts - had about 8 people shake my hand after the game and congratulate us. Again afterwards at the pubs our Sens jerseys might as well have been credit cards. I think my liver is in a mason jar somewhere in between the two cities....go road trips go

Go to bed.

3-1 over Flames .500 after 20 games...

CALGARY ? Bobby Butler leapt in the air, and there was no mistaking, the monkey had been lifted off his back.

Yes, the Butler finally did it.

The Senators winger ended his nine-game scoring slump and his timing couldn?t have been more perfect with a two-goal performance in the third period to lift the Senators to a 3-1 victory over the Flames on Tuesday night.

Butler couldn?t wipe the smile off his face.

?The coaching was telling me to shoot the puck more and a be a little more selfish,? said Butler. ?It was nice to get the first one, it a surprise to get the second one. It just felt good to get the first one, but good things happen when you put the puck at the net. It feels good to be back.?

Coupled with a brilliant 38-save performance from Craig Anderson and captain Daniel Alfredsson?s fifth goal of the season, the Senators picked up their first win at the Saddledome since Jan. 9, 2003 to end a five-game winless streak here.

?That was a long time coming for us,? said centre Jason Spezza. ?This has been a tough building for us to get wins in. We played a good road game. We were patient. We got a big goal from (Butler).?

Not only did the Senators? second straight victory on this five-game road trip move the club back to .500 with a 9-9-1 record, it served notice Anderson could be getting his consistency back after taking on Miikka Kiprusoff.

Butler?s first goal was a thing of beauty. He made a great move around Jay Bouwmeester near the blue line, then got Calgary?s Mark Giordano turned around and beat Kiprusoff high on the glove side for the winner at 9:50.

Yup, it was worth the wait for Butler.

Coach Paul MacLean couldn?t resist stating the obvious.

?The Butler did it,? said MacLean. ?I?m really happy for him. Bobby has been working really hard since training camp, skating hard and diligent without the puck. It was really good to see for him."

It was quite a battle between Anderson and Kiprusoff and it looked like nobody was going to score on either of these guys until the clubs exchanged goals in a span of 1:02 late in the second period as the teams headed into the third period tied 1-1.

Alfredsson finally opened the scoring at 18:44. That was the result of a great effort by Nick Foligno to keep the puck in the Calgary zone to set up Alfredsson, who beat Kiprusoff high on the glove side.

Unfortunately, Ottawa couldn?t hold the lead.

While Anderson was spectacular with 16 stops in the second period, he didn?t help himself on a goal credited to Tom Kostopolous at 19:45 after giving the puck to Matt Stajan. The shot bounced in off Alfredsson?s stick.

Alfredsson said he put the puck in his own net.

?I scored that one,? said Alfredsson.

That being said, the win was nice.

?We knew we were going to have our hands full in this one, but this is going to give us some confidence,? said Alfredsson. ?It was great for us to get the win. We wanted to pick up where left off in Toronto. I thought we did a good job of putting pressure on them.?

You can?t say enough about the way Anderson is playing. He had Jarome Iginla shaking his head on at least two occasions, including a great stop with five minutes left in the period and during a power play banging away in the crease.

The Senators dodged a bullet when they killed off a 5-on-3 man-advantage for a total of 1:04 early in the second. That came with Jesse Winchester and Erik Condra in the box, but the Senators penalty killers didn?t even give Calgary a sniff.

The Flames are now just 2-for-40 at home with the man advantage.

The Senators? penalty killing has been steadily improving, but it helps when you?ve got Anderson making the big saves.

The Senators and Flames played a high-tempo first period. Ottawa outshot the Flames 14-11, but you could argue Calgary had the better chances and knocked on the door a few times.

Not only did Anderson make a good glove stop on Giordano midway through the first, he had to come up big early with Lee Stempniak parked in front. Anderson made back-to-back pad stops only 1:25 into the game that set the tone for what kind of night it was going to be.

Anderson said he felt strong.

?You just want to give the team a chance to win. You?ve just got to be the guy who the team can count on for the big or routine save,? said Anderson. ?There were a lot of shots, but you know against a guy like Kipprusoff it?s going to be a tough game. We were able to get the job done.?

The road trip continues Thursday night against the Oilers in Edmonton at Rexall Place. Game time is 9:30 p.m.

Nikita Filatov's Russian agent says Filatov is considering returning to Russia after another demotion to the minors by the #Sens.

Bye-byesky

Some strangeness going on with regards to this.

Supposedly, the article referenced doesn't actually say anything from Filatov's camp, just that there is a team in the KHL interested in him.  Filatov is in Binghamton today and practicing with the team, so either way, he's not issuing an ultimatum or anything at this time.  He's still doing his job.

Steve Lloyd (Team 1200);
Could always change, but for now, been told by people that would know that Filatov/KHL rumour is BS. Also dismissed by Filatov himself.

Joy Lindsay (Binghamton Senators Beat Writer);
Nikita Filatov said he can't talk about #KHL rumors. "No reason," he said. "Just rumors."

He's not exactly denying it though...

I hope he at least gives it the year.  Slumps and injuries are going to hit, he'll get his shot.  If he spends the whole season either in Binghamton or getting 7 minutes a game with Konopka and Winchester, I won't blame him if he leaves.
