Official Ottawa Senators Thread

Our current #15 is tied with our old #15 in goals.

Plus, our current #15 skates, hits, fights, plays defense and kills penalties.

Your old number #15 is playing for the team that's 1st in the NHL right now. I think he wins.

Neil vs. Ovechkin.

Neil with a solid hit in the corner. Ovechkin pitchforks him in the gut skating up ice. Neil goes down and gets called for unsportsmanlike, no call on Ovechkin. Ovy says he's not that kind of player.

It looks like he was swinging his stick as part of his skating stride, but I think he knew exactly what he was doing. Just my opinion.

Yup.  One of those "accidentally-on-purpose" spear, but I think he knew what he was doing.  I'm actually impressed Ovi was able to time it perfectly, made it look like it was just his stride, and didn't even look at him.

At the same time, as soon as he feels the stick in his gut, look at Neil look for the ref before he goes down.  It's a spear, and Neil may have been in some discomfort afterwards, but he definitely embellishes.

He knew what he was doing.  I also think Neil sold it a little though.

Bob MacKenzie posted the rules on spearing on twitter, though.  By the definition in the rulebook, that should have been 5 and a game for Ovechkin.

I would have been okay, in this situation, with offsetting minors.  Give Ovechkin 2 for spearing, and give Neil 2 for embellishment.

EDIT: Nope, it wasn't Bobby Mac.  Not sure where I read it, but it basically says a two minute minor for spearing is if a player attempts to spear an opponent but doesn't make contact.  5 and a game is for intentionally and successfully spearing a player.

If you believe that Ovechkin did know what he was doing, and that he did make contact with Neil, it would be 5 and a game.

I'm no fan of Ovechkin, but I do hate Neil - and he went down pretty quickly there for something that didn't look like it was done too forcefully.

Maybe it got him in a bad spot, but since I have nothing but dislike for Neil, I withdraw any benefit of my doubt.

Yeah, I think that's definitely an "accidentally on purpose" type play. The stick movement was definitely part of his skating motion, but, I think he skates up right beside Neil on purpose so that the stick would get him in the gut.

Huh.

You know, I've always been under the impression that "spearing" was a term used in reference to the shaft end of the stick rather than the blade end. Apparently, I've been wrong about that for quite some time, and the rules (62.1) specifically reference the blade end only.

I believe that is a 'butt end'.

58.6 Fines and Suspensions - When a major penalty and game misconduct are imposed under this rule, an automatic fine of one hundred dollars ($100) will be imposed.

One HUNDRED Dollars?

Jeeze, how can the players afford these things.

It is what it is. Will be interesting to see what Shanahan thinks but I doubt he gets any games. I'll give Ovechkin the benefit of the doubt on this one - it did look somewhat accidental.
Tough game to lose though - we had them on the ropes. Those are big points to be giving away.
