Official Ottawa Senators Thread

Brian Murray is stepping down as GM of the Senators.

Kudos to him. He was put in a pretty tough spot of having to satisfy the desires to make the playoffs every season while operating with a limited budget and managed to do a halfway decent job of it.

How Murray has coped with his health so far:

Ottawa Senators (@Senators) general manager Pierre Dorion announced today that the club has dismissed head coach Dave Cameron and assistant coaches Andre Tourigny and Rick Wamsley. Assistant coach Jason Smith has been relieved of his coaching duties and has been offered another position within the organization.

Cameron, 57, became the 11th head coach in franchise history when he was promoted to the position on Dec. 8, 2014. Prior to his appointment as head coach, he spent the previous three-plus seasons as an assistant coach with the Senators, after initially being hired by the club on June 23, 2011. Cameron has a career National Hockey League head coaching record of 70-50-17 (.537, 137 games).

Tourigny, 41, joined the Senators coaching staff on July 1, 2015. He spent the two previous campaigns as an assistant coach with the Colorado Avalanche. Prior to joining the Avalanche, he served as the head coach and general manager of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League?s Rouyn-Noranda Huskies.

Wamsley, 56, was hired by the club on July 28, 2010. A former NHL goaltender who played 407 games with the Calgary Flames, St. Louis Blues, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadiens, he worked previously with the Columbus Blue Jackets, St. Louis and Toronto.

Not a huge surprise. Not sure it's going to have much impact, though. I imagine there'll be a few more coaching casualties to come.

Not a surprise, really.  Clean-up in effect.

Waiting for the Boston shoe to drop too.

That's the biggie.  Guy on tsn says Neely doesn't like Julien that much anyway and so may have leverage to convince the GM to move on.

Sens go through head coaches like I go through coffee.

They're still paying part of McLean's contract (as well as the assistants), now this latest group dismissed. Soon, they will also add the new staff to the payroll.

Smartest thing Melnyk's done as owner?

Dorian has a good eye for talent apparently, now a good coach. The Battle of Ontario might get a little more interesting.

I really don't think the problem there has been bad coaching.

I wasn't really saying that.

Just that this and the GM hire seem to be a step in the right direction.

I don't entirely see how you can say that and not be implicitly saying they had a bad coach before but, heck, I'm not that invested in it.

I like Boucher, he was a guy I would have wanted if Babcock didn't happen (and as everyone probably knows Boucher was very close to signing here).

Marc Crawford is joining Boucher as his associate coach. They both coached in the Swiss league for the past few seasons after their last NHL dismissals. Crawford's NHL resume is pretty dismal, but maybe he learned a thing or two over in Switzerland. And he of course won't the head coach in this situation.

Good combo.  They each have experience at the NHL & Euro level.

Interesting to see what kind of system will be implemented.
