He was Kingston's head coach for 3 years before stepping into the assistants role with Florida in 2017.

I remember there being some talk about Keefe prior to his promotion and whether he would prefer to be a head coach with the Marlies or an assistant coach with the Leafs. I guess it's clear how McFarland would view that.

He sure did a bang-up job with the PP.  Then again, he didn't have much to work with.

They were 6th in the league in PP% when the season was suspended?

Hogwash!

I thought I saw they were 21st or something.

They were 21st on the PK.

OK, then I withdraw my ill-informed snotty remark and apologize to Paul McFarland and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.  :-\ :-\ :-\ :-X :-[ :-[

The initial results for the team?s power play under McFarland this season were concerning, with the team underperforming at 17.6% (mid-pack in the league) prior to the firing of head coach Mike Babcock.

[...]

However, once Sheldon Keefe took over the bench, it seemed to free up McFarland ? who could often be seen highlighting teachable moments on his iPad on the bench during games ? to infuse some new ideas and creativity.

[...]

McFarland tried out Nylander ? previously somewhat stranded on the second unit ? in the slot role of the top power play, utilized Matthews? developing one-timer more often, and gave Tyson Barrie the reins on the point. There remained points of frustration and inconsistency ? the lack of shot threat outside of Matthews made it predictable for spells, while the team?s execution on entries wavered at times, and Morgan Rielly was confined to the second unit ? but it was hard to argue with the results, as the Leafs? man advantage clicked at 26.4% post-coaching change, good for second in the NHL from November 20 onward.

Over that time period, Nylander and Matthews were top ten in the league in power-play goals with eight apiece. The PP opportunity no doubt helped fuel the confidence of Nylander, who was in the midst of a big bounce-back season and on pace for his first-ever 30-goal season prior to the suspension of the 2019-20 campaign.

Jack Han, former Minute Tactics video guy turned Leafs hockey ops/dev assistant, then Marlies assistant coach this past season is now a free agent, and thus back to writing. His latest touches on the Leafs powerplay and the nuances of inverting wingers.

If your winger is a shooter, then having them on their off wing can be a bonus. Any powerplay I've ran, I've always inverted my wingers.

Saving this for break-time reading.

Honestly, the largest failing of this season's PP was neglecting Nylander's entry and playmaking prowess and instead using Matthews as an entry option. Auston* has the largest 'gravitational pull' on the ice, so use him to make space for Marner or Nylander and let him get lost in the weeds after crossing over.

* He was, by the numbers, our best entry player on the PP though, because Marner kind of just didn't really have it most of the year.

edit: o hai that's my son-in-law
Auston Matthews receiving more dangerous passes was in a large part due to William Nylander playing the net-front/low position on PP1 in 2019. Nylander excelled in the position because he was both an excellent passer and a scoring threat, second on the Leafs to Auston Matthews in 5v4 goals scored this season. In fact, Nylander scored 8 5v4 goals in 2019, exactly as many as John Tavares did in 2018, in 20 fewer minutes played.

Nylander replacing Tavares elevated the netfront position to more than just a player to whom to funnel passes to, aiming for deflections and shots in-tight. Instead, Nylander was able to turn it into a dual-threat because he was a better 5v4 passer in 2019 than Tavares was in 2018.

[...]

When looking at total royal road passes, Nylander made 4 times as many royal road passes as Tavares, nearly half of his shot assists. Even when narrowing it down to just low chaos shot assists, Nylander still completed 14 royal road passes. To compare to Marner, who is considered the Leafs? best playmaker, Nylander?s 16 royal road shot assists were more than Marner?s in both seasons (11 in 2018, 9 in 2019).
