Potential Buyouts

Exactly. The compliance buyout is for a guy with a bad contract and no trade value. Outside of Komisarek the Leafs just don't have anyone who qualifies.

Which puts them in an interesting position where they could trade for someone another team wants to buyout but can't afford to or have other priorities and possibly get something of value as well. It's unlikely, but, it's a scenario that has to at least be considered.

Liles at 3.875M and has 3 years left after this year is looking more of a buyout option to me, especially if Gardiner gets back and is healthy.  Also if Grabovksi doesn't pick it up do you really want to pay him $5.5M for another 4 seasons?  His returns might get worse year after year.

I've addressed Liles in other posts, but even considering Grabovski at this point is nuts, as far as I'm concerned. Yes, he's had a slow start, but, it's not he's being paid based off one good season. He's still a quality offensive centre - something that is hard to find - and he's still relatively young.

Grabbo is being used in more of a checking role this year that allows Kadri more of an offensive role because Kadri's not as reliable yet as a two way player. I think that has taken some of Grabbo's scoring down.

Decent centers are hard to find so I agree, even if he's overpaid some right now, he's not a guy I'd be in a rush to buyout.

It wouldn't surprise me if they bought a prospect or decent pick that way. I doubt they would take on a big contract but they might do another Lombardi type deal - where the guy looks like a write off for $3 mil for a couple of seasons.

Islanders placed DiPietro on waivers yesterday so that...

Arthur Staple  @StapeNewsday
Team will use compliance buyout for DiPietro -- $1.5 million owed for next 16 seasons will not count against cap.

Finally, the Islanders will rid themselves of the albatross that was DiPietro's 'monstrous' contract.

I wish someone would give me $1.5M for the next 16 years for doing nothing.

Should have tried harder to become an elite athlete then.

I know everyone wants to see Komisarek bought out, but does it really make sense to buy out a guy on the last year of his deal?  Wouldn't it make more sense to buy out a contract that has 4-5 years left on it if the player isn't performing as expected?

There isn't a contract on the team that makes more sense to be bought out as a compliance buy out than Komisarek's $4.5M healthy scratch.

I win.
