A fairly barebones roster from the Leafs here. Samsonov will start in net. Sandin will make his preseason debut. And Robertson and Malgin (with likely Holmberg in between) will headline the forward group. Expect a full NHL line-up in the Saturday game.

Yeah I kind of expected a Marlies type roster tonight and a regular lineup tomorrow.  Although Robertson & Malgin are probably worried they're not on the regular roster.  I assume Sandin plays both

Probably a good chance Robertson and Malgin play both too, with obviously more minutes/responsibilities in this one.

Potential #Leafs lines tomorrow based on the announced roster (fair bit of guessing here):

Robertson-Holmberg-Malgin
Abruzzese-Gaudette-Steeves
McMann-SDA-Anderson
Clifford-Shaw-Simmonds
Ellis

Kral-Sandin
Mete-Villeneuve
Rifai-Hollowell
Kokkonen

Samsonov

One reporters guess on the lines ...

Gaudette not centering Robertson-Malgin is probably some sort of a tell

Aside from NHLers Samsonov & Sandin, Robertson-Malgin seem to be the only two with a decent shot to be on the roster.

I guess this is the "let's not get any more NHLers hurt than we have to" roster.

We'll have a better idea of what we have in Samsonov after this game.

EDIT: sorry for double quote but sometimes, I do not see the tweet text - so I'll leave it until I learn what I'm doing wrong

His early injury didn't help him yeah I don't think he's really in consideration for a NHL roster spot at all right now. Assuming ZAR signs there's only 2 spots open (1 if/when Tavares is healthy) and Robertson and Malgin have clearly separated themselves from the rest of the pack there.

It's in Gaudette's best interest (in my opinion) to play a bit like ass now, and slip through waivers to get his strength and game rebuilt with the Marlies and their resources and try to get NHL time later on call ups or at the deadline. Or else he'll get waiver wired poached by ARI or ANA or whatever and just feel bad.

I've wondered about that. Because of his health problem getting resolved, he could have been a found wallet.

Anderson has underachieved. I'm suspicious he's not knocking himself out because on his right wing position, he's looking at:
Marner
Nylander
Jarnkrok
Aube-Kubel

Left side: Bunting, Engvall are established and they appear to love Aston-Reese on the 4th line.

He was arguably already a little behind Steeves coming into camp. Then Robertson, Malgin, Holmberg and even McMann have great or better camps. I'm wondering of he concluded "ok. I'm screwed here. I'll stay healthy and hopefully, someone picks me up on waivers because last season in the AHL, I wasn't bad, I have decent draft pedigree and size, etc." Now, he's been one of the least noticeable in camp so teams might take a pass.

I think Gaudette had a shot until he got hurt. He's back playing but what shoulder injury recovers that quickly ... He's playing hurt to try to snag a job. That seemed to end it for him here.

The forwards seem deep right now but we won't really know definitively until they've been picked over by waivers (or what I suspect is likely: a trade of some kind to open cap space or reduce losses to waivers)

I don't think Gaudette and Anderson are big threats to get claimed at this point. I think Malgin could get picked up if he needs to be waived, so that could play a role if a roster spot comes down to him or Robertson.

I could see someone who wants some toughness maybe taking a flyer on either Simmonds or Clifford. With Torts preaching that sort of stuff already at Philly's camp I wonder if there's a possibility Simmonds returns there.

On D I think Benn would have been a very, very likely claim if he was healthy. Who knows now. I wouldn't be shocked if someone claimed Mete but I don't think it's as likely.

I do wonder about the bottom feeders. These guys don't cost them anything - in major contract $ or draft picks. For example, I would look into Gaudette if I were a GM of those types of teams. Depends on his medical prospects now. I would look at Anderson vs what I currently have.

Simmonds I do worry about in that who do we have to do that role if he's not and we need it. Question is: do teams really need it? I'm not sure. Leafs appear to feel that they don't.

I agree with you on Malgin. He is unlikely to clear waivers.
I'm probably in the minority in that if it came down to it, I'd send Robertson down before exposing Malgin. Robertson is unlikely to be able to keep that pace up for the balance of the season - as is Malgin. Having him as depth for scoring wingers is likely to pay off.

It's hard to figure out exactly what to do until Dubas makes his move. I find it hard to believe he'll sit tight and just waive all these guys to go with a 18-19 man roster.

Mete being hurt is another cap issue if he's on IR rather than LTIR. He can't be waived.

If one we're going to waive Malgin, for example, wouldn't the GM ask around the league "anyone want to give me something for Malgin instead of a bottom feeder picking up Malgin for nothing off waivers?"

For them to have some sort of a deal worked out with Aston-Reese, they have to know there is something else that will take place to solidify the roster. I strongly feel that something is going to happen beyond waivers.

Gaudette being claimed after none of the bottom feeders decided to take a chance on Alex Barre-Boulet would be a very bewildering move. There will probably be like a dozen Gaudette-types on waivers soon (someone like Adam Brooks has already cleared).

The Leafs certainly don't buy into the philosophy of needing a "face puncher" in the line-up to protect their stars, but contrary to popular belief Dubas has brought in a number of players specifically because of the physicality that they provide. That's one of the reasons I'd be very shocked if they let ZAR slip loose, he (along with NAK) would be the only forwards who can throw their body around.

That's what I would do too. If Malgin's preseason performances were a mirage they'll still definitely have Robertson available as a Plan B. That might not be the case if it went the other way.

Not gonna lie I do think this is the most likely scenario at this point. Sign ZAR, keep Malgin up, send Robertson down. If Tavares isn't healthy to start the season then play with a player short in game 1. Use an emergency call-up on Robertson until Tavares returns. Send him back down when Tavares is healthy, run a 20-man roster, and then make your cap clearing move closer to when/if it becomes absolutely necessary.

I love that Clifford and Simmonds are trying to wheel and deal a little with all the space Detroit is giving them

2-0 AHL so far.

So if the NHL was a play-in league Detroit would be relegated and Toronto would have two teams in the NHL? LOL
