I don't think Gaudette and Anderson are big threats to get claimed at this point. I think Malgin could get picked up if he needs to be waived, so that could play a role if a roster spot comes down to him or Robertson.
I could see someone who wants some toughness maybe taking a flyer on either Simmonds or Clifford. With Torts preaching that sort of stuff already at Philly's camp I wonder if there's a possibility Simmonds returns there.
On D I think Benn would have been a very, very likely claim if he was healthy. Who knows now. I wouldn't be shocked if someone claimed Mete but I don't think it's as likely.
I do wonder about the bottom feeders. These guys don't cost them anything - in major contract $ or draft picks. For example, I would look into Gaudette if I were a GM of those types of teams. Depends on his medical prospects now. I would look at Anderson vs what I currently have.
Simmonds I do worry about in that who do we have to do that role if he's not and we need it. Question is: do teams really need it? I'm not sure. Leafs appear to feel that they don't.
I agree with you on Malgin. He is unlikely to clear waivers.
I'm probably in the minority in that if it came down to it, I'd send Robertson down before exposing Malgin. Robertson is unlikely to be able to keep that pace up for the balance of the season - as is Malgin. Having him as depth for scoring wingers is likely to pay off.
It's hard to figure out exactly what to do until Dubas makes his move. I find it hard to believe he'll sit tight and just waive all these guys to go with a 18-19 man roster.
Mete being hurt is another cap issue if he's on IR rather than LTIR. He can't be waived.
If one we're going to waive Malgin, for example, wouldn't the GM ask around the league "anyone want to give me something for Malgin instead of a bottom feeder picking up Malgin for nothing off waivers?"
For them to have some sort of a deal worked out with Aston-Reese, they have to know there is something else that will take place to solidify the roster. I strongly feel that something is going to happen beyond waivers.
