Random rumours

The guy that was probably the MVP of the team last year, and after two starts, people want to trade him.

You guys kill me.

We've finally got some depth in goal, don't take it for granted.

I wouldn't move him right now at all, except the cap crunch has me thinking they could expedite the process.

There is a good bunch of veteran backup types out there who would probably sign for $500K and sit on the bench for the 70 games Bernier can probably play.

I love the tandem and the depth it brings, but there are other areas that could use some improvement and if trading Reimer can bring the right return, I think it has to be considered.

Agreed 100% Frank. After three games, anointing Bernier a Vezina-candidate and relegating Reimer to back-up seems a tad premature.

Reimer will do well as long as the defense can prevent the opposition from gobbling up those juicy rebounds.  Keep the opposition shooting from the perimeter and he'll stop those all day.  Problem might be that although the Leafs defense is 'better', they're not 'Kostka'-type better.  Reimer would do better with a lunch pail defense.

My gut says if Bernier keeps his play up, Reimer will be in Edmonton by year's end. Seeing dubnyk's performance last night, I don't see how they can remain patient.

Reimers got to be less jittery. I'm sure we'll see a bad game from Bernier too and we'll be down on him soon enough, but he just looks so much more in control back there. Reimer is a bad puck handler and keeps knocking out juicy rebounds. He also doesn't have much of an excuse with the 4th goal which went right through him.

I love Reimer and have been keeping track of his career since we drafted him, but he's gotta work on those fundamentals.

It's funny, I thought Reimer looked way more steady in the pre-season (through my limited viewings).  Bernier, on the other hand, looked jittery.  They seem to have reversed, so far, in the regular season.

I'm in the minority who thought Reimer would hold his net, especially with the way pre-season went, but right now, I don't see how you can't run with Bernier - he looks hot right now.

By looking at his career numbers over 2 games maybe?

Reimer hasn't lost his net yet.

Is this in reply to me?  I never said that.

You seemed to imply it, maybe I read it wrong? About holding his net...

Well, I never said definitively that he lost the net.  What I was saying was if I was the coach, I'd be leading with Bernier.

If this goaltender thing isn't decided in the next few weeks, perhaps a goalie punch up is in order. Bernier likes to wait until the dust has settled before he comes out swinging though, so there's that...

I can't see Nonis making a move in the near term.  Leafs have depth in net now, better to let the two guys battle it out and *hopefully* win a ton of games.  That raises the stock of both goalies, and makes a trade more attractive to other teams later in the season.  If they're both playing really well by the deadline, I can totally see a trade made similar to the time Leafs traded Fuhr for Andreychuk and went with Potvin in net.

Yeah, I doubt we see anything happen with the goalies until after New Year's at the earliest.

I may lean toward Bernier also now, but the battle in net is far from over and I'd still expect Carlyle to do exactly what he has been doing and play the odds.

Regardless of the goaltending situation, or whether or not there really is an interest in making any moves this early in the season,  I believe the Leafs are in need of a solid defenceman to help alleviate some of the pressure they seem to be having on the back end. I'd be very wary about trading away Gardiner, but if there is someone that could fill the void, perhaps a Percy or Biggs might be doable.

Yeah. Gill is not coming back to Toronto, but some of the others might be a good fit.
