Rielly also has a better PPG and played on a significantly worse team last season.

I might have looked for a bridge deal here, perhaps that's why there was such a delay.

I'm the first guy to say that this sort of thinking is ridiculous but I do think there's something of a mental thing about a defenseman hitting the 40 point mark. Almost like the 60 point mark for forwards I think it puts players into a different sort of category in some people's minds.
 
That's Seth Jones money. I'm not sure I'd put Risto there yet. And considering the last two big RFAs to get signed were strong-armed into taking lesser deals I'm surprised this one ended like it did. Feels like the Sabres lost this battle.

While I'm generally anti-bridge contract I feel like it would have been the smarter play here. There's a few red-flags in Risto's stats. I'd want to see how much playing on a crappy team effected those before committing long-term like this.
