This is certainly a scenario I could do without witnessing next season?

Can we sign him then not protect him and Seattle take him?
Yes as long as he doesn't have a NMC or of he does he waives it. I don't see him getting signed before the draft.

Man Button what a genius. Guy is a fool. Connor was on pace for over 150 points this season WITHOUT Zach Hyman. Who woulda thunk. LMAO.

Connor McDavid could produce just as much as he did this past season!

On First Up Colaiacovo was saying how much they'll miss his leadership and all that like they did when he was hurt at the end of the year. I'm like what is he talking about? They scored more and the PK went from 76% efficient to 85% when he was out. The team didn't miss a beat. Said it many times, I like Hyman but man is he ever overrated by some.

Word is Oilers offered up a 6th round pick for Hyman. Leafs said no and another GM agreed with the Leafs, it's not enough. Maybe he goes by tomorrow so the Leafs can use the pick in the draft.

I don't know about any of that...it wouldn't make any sense that Edmonton would negotiate an 8 deal with Hyman without knowing what the Leafs would charge for the 8th year sign and trade.

Oilers have a 1st, 4th, 2 6ths and a 7th this year.

We're obviously not getting the 1st so would the 4th or both 6's be enough?  Or, do we trade for a player or picks in next years draft?

You could be right. I like Hyman and when he was scoring goals at a similar rate to Nylander at $2.25m he was looking really good, but this might be the one time a Toronto sports team makes the "smart" decision and lets a player walk.

Unless they were effectively ok with his AAV at both the 7 and 8 year terms and just wanted to weigh the Leafs asking price against the slightly higher cap hit.

Edmonton has 2 deals in place to cover both scenarios.

I don't think we should take anything away from the incredible offensive season that McDavid (and Matthews for that matter) had this past year, but replicating that over the course of a 82-game season where they aren't playing Vancouver or Ottawa every single week would be a whole other impressive feat.

The longer this Hyman thing goes the more likely it is Leafs get nothing and it's only a 7 year deal. Free agency is fast approaching.

I guess the question is how much is $500K in cap room worth to the Oilers?

I can?t wrap my head around why Edmonton would be willing to pay anything just to get Hyman for that extra 8th year.

It lowers the cap hit.

But it anchors them an extra year for a guy who will be overpaid the second it gets signed, let alone 8 years from now.

It takes up less cap room in the short term, its a trade off they appear interested in.

Bonkers.

I love Hyman and what he brings, and think there will be a void with his absence more than we may believe there will be.

But 7/8 years, $5/5.5 million...that?s splitting hairs to me.  To command that and actually get it baffles me. I understand the money over a 4 year term, 5, tops. But Edmonton seems to just be outbidding themselves.

Getting 6 seasons for Hyman at $5mil before he suddenly has a big toe injury that causes him to get LTIR'd for the 7th and potentially 8th season of his contract really isn't as bad as it's being made out to be.

I don't get it either.  I get the whole "lowers the cap hit" but based on the numbers thrown around, is 400k and change enough of a lowering the cap hit to actually care?  That doesn't even get you a league minimum player.

Hyman's at that "awkward" age too where he is not old at 29, but a 7/8-year deal takes him past 35.  But it seems like for a player like him and his style, age is likely to catch up to him much quicker also.  If he was like 26, you can live with his play sloping downward at 32 and eating the last couple years of the contract.
