Robidas to TO (3 years, $3mil cap hit)

Don't mind it. At least it's not 7 years. Contract is reasonable and he's the type of vet you can trade at the deadline if he's healthy.

Oh he's 37? I thought he was 35 for some reason.  Hard to bank on good performances at ages 37-40.  But we'll see.

Yeah, he's two years too old to really like the deal, but it could be worse.  Of course we are operating with an absurdly low bar here.

I don't really understand this signing to be honest. Veteran depth? Maybe this frees up Phaneuf to stay off the PK? Does Polak kill penalties too?

I mean, he's a good player and it's at a pretty reasonable term. Yeah, he doesn't do a lot for the team but at some point they just need bodies. If he's a good veteran presence and can be relatively healthy this is more or less no-risk.

Polak kills penalties, yeah. 3rd on the Blues but that's behind Pietrangelo, Jay-Bo, and Jackman.

The only problem I have with this deal, other than the 3rd year I guess, is that either Robidas or Polak will now pretty much be forced to play on the 2nd pairing, when they're both better suited for the 3rd pairing.

1 second less SH TOI/g than Jackman.

Thanks, yeah I didn't really look closely. Our entire penalty kill unit is going to look very different with almost all of our penalty killing forwards leaving and Robidas and Polak coming in on the blueline.

3 years for a 37 year old with 86 combined games over the last 3 years.    That projects to 33 games over an 82 game schedule.  I really like Robidas.  He showed he could come back from a broken leg...and then he broke his leg again.

I think this might be one of those Van Ryn situations where if we get him healthy in the lineup we really like what we see, it just won't be very often that it happens.    I foresee LTIR in his future.

Am I missing something here? We have the lockout year, where he played the full 48 games, and the year prior to that he played 75. This last year he was at 48.  How does that project to 33?

I like him and I like the cap hit but yea, he's signed until he's 40 and coming off a broken leg. I guess it could be worse.

Crap, I was rushing and used the 13/14 season splits as seasons.

Solid blueliner in his prime, but he is well past that now at 37. I don't really know why we had to give him 3 years, maybe that is the price we have to pay to get free agents to come here now? As far as injuries go though, to be fair Robidas didn't miss much time to injury prior to last season. It could be that age finally caught up to him or it could be he was just really unlucky to break his leg twice last year. Time will tell...

I think it's pretty safe to say that just about every contract that gets signed involves teams giving players more than they would ideally like in order to get them to agree.

But if your Nonis you have to be asking yourself,if Robidas breaks his leg a third time, will he be any slower then Franson?

One of the players I wanted for the Leafs, probably a year too long, but if he can rebound health wise he'll be good for the team.

Makes no sense at all. Bolland gone injury prone.
This guys best year was 2010!

It's 4 years gone.
Not a good pick-up at all.
You will rarely see this guy play.

I dont mind the signing. He will a good veteran presence in the locker room and on the ice. Chelios played until 45. Just saying.

Probably a year too long on the deal, but, I like the addition and the salary. Even that 3rd year probably won't be too big a deal, either.

Let's hope he doesn't break a leg yet again.  :o

Seriously,  he will be a solid piece of our porous defence.  (sigh) though at what price.  3 yrs/$9M is a bit steep for a veteran of his age, but if that's whom the Leafs management wanted, then so be it.  A cap hit  $3M doesn't make it catastrophic in that sense.
