So here's what I think is(hopefully anyway) an interesting question that came out of a discussion of Baseball and it's home run record and what standard should be used for modern players.
Basically, I wonder what goal and point totals people think would constitute a modern player putting together a season that was as good or better than any other scoring seasons in history. Obviously the game has changed so much since Lemieux and Gretzky's heyday that while those totals are undeniably impressive, they're not really fair standards to hold the likes of Crosby and his eventual successors to. Gretzky was great, obviously, but he wasn't twice as good as Crosby at his best.
To get a clue, a useful tool is adjusting points for the level of league scoring. Hockey Reference's adjusted point totals adjusts Gretzky's best ever goal total to 69 and his highest ever point total to 170 and Lemieux's to 71 and 165. Brett Hull's 86 goal season adjusts to 78 goals which is the highest total I can find(Ovechkin's best clocks in at 72).
So what would a modern player have to do to have the most impressive scoring season of all time? Personally, I think 70ish goals and 150-160 points would do it. Basically a step or two better than Crosby was in 2010-2011 but over the course of a full season.
