Game Notes

ott
?Craig Anderson will likely start for the sens
?It's a new era for the sens. They've gotten used to not having Erik Karlsson around but now they'll have to adjust to not having the likes of Mark Stone and Matt Duchene up front as well
?The Battle of Ontario gets a little more interesting with a number of former Leafs playing on the other side. I'm sure Rielly will send his sympathies to Chabot and Brannstrom
?Scott "who?" Sabourin will make his NHL debut at the age of 27. Sabourin is an Ottawa native who has 77 points and 646 PIM in 308 games in the AHL and definitely wasn't only signed to a NHL contract because Matthews made him famous
?Like a number of cap strapped teams Ottawa is resorting to using a 22 man roster instead of the typical 23 to stay under the ceiling... lmao jk they're just cheap

TOR
?Frederik Andersen will likely start for the Leafs
?A new season with a new defence group, a new 3C, new assistant coaches, new speciality team strategies, and potentially a new captain?
?No RFA holdouts to put a damper on this season opener. Marner barely missed a day of camp and Nylander will have the benefit of starting the season on time. If pre-season was any indication then those two will be getting off to a great start this season
?Rasmus Sandin will make his NHL debut at the age of 19 alongside Martin "Big Safety" Marincin. Whether he sticks around after Dermott returns will depend on his performance in the month of October
?Cody Ceci, please don't suck

Injuries

?Rudolfs Balcers - Lower Body - Injured Reserve
?Christian Wolanin - Shoulder - Injured Reserve
Code:

?Travis Dermott - Shoulder - Injured Reserve
?Zach Hyman - Knee - Injured Reserve

I hope that Kerfoot can get a little more involved than he did in the pre-season.

Yeah it hasn't been talked about much but that 3rd line might have a slow start to the season. One guy new to North America, one guy new to playing centre in the NHL, and one guy who was pegged to play on the 4th line.

It feels like Anderson has been their goalie for 20 years.

He's really wrapping up a weird career. I feel like he could have been a real difference maker if he'd found a place where he could make 35-45 starts a year and then been the starter in the playoffs but he's always struggled to rise above middling with a full season as a #1.

This made me laugh more than it should have.

I'm predicting big performances from Matthews, Nylander, and Barrie. I think Matthews wants to prove he's the man on this team, and that's a scary thought.

Yeah, I think Matthews is poised for a big year.

And then after a month, they get a different winger who routinely skates himself into corners.

The venn diagram of people who think that what Matthews did to Sabourin was dispectful and people who are first to complain about how everyone is too sensitive these days is a perfect circle.

Is that where this storm has come from? Borowiecki's tears?

Unless Sabourin spears him first shift out.

I think both Mikheyev and Sandin will be ?surprisingly noticeable? in their Leaf debuts.

Matthews will just be noticeably himself in season debuts.

Go Leafs go!

I honestly can't wait until fights are officially banned from hockey.  I'm getting tired of the "you don't know how tough it is" whinefests when we don't kiss the behinds of AHL/ECHL calibre players who only exist because they fight.  You are making 70K a year to have 10-12 fights a year against equally crappy fighters.  I don't view that as "how hard it is" but a blessing that they are even playing hockey professionally when this is their only skill.

There are plenty of boxers/MMA fighters who make fractions of that while having noone give a damn about their career.  I'm all for supporting guys who contribute to the on-ice performance but fight occasionally.  I'm done with the guys who don't contribute anything to the game outside of cheap shots and fighting another fighter for a meaningless fight a dozen times a year.

Ottawa has got such a weird lineup.

They've got a couple of good to great pieces in Chabot, Brannstrom, Tkachuk, Duclair and solid depth in Brown, Tierney, Ennis, and Zaitsev. Unfortunately, they also have pretty heavy anchors and their solid depth pieces have to play above their levels regularly. It's going to be a rough season, not quite Detroit rough, but rough nonetheless.
