People need fanboats and gator meat.

You can get the whole team in this one!

As I was on the fence with this I think the Leafs management was saved from themselves in making a ridiculously high offer to Stamkos. Once the 11 and 12 numbers started coming out it didn't make sense anymore. Leafs still on a nice track, management is blessed.

It's pretty obvious to me that Stamkos at least wanted to hear what the Leafs had to say.  He likely wasn't impressed with the numbers being discussed, and maybe position played into it as well (in years 2 onwards we need you to be a winger etc), and he decided to stay in Tampa.  He probably told Tampa  to hold on until this time back when the original offer was given.

If this is the case, this is prudent Leaf management, telling Stamkos if you are going to come, you are going to come on our terms, not yours.

Yeah, the money from TBL and the timing (Leaf pres was today? yesterday?) lead me to think it came down to stay with the Lightning or leave for the Leafs. And the Leafs' higher number wasn't much higher or their presentation failed to impress in some way or another.

I think Stamkos is cursing the Leafs winning the lottery, which in my mind changed the course of action for the Leafs...as it should have.

I don't think I understand exactly what you mean here, but I'm a bit disappointed that they grabbed a goalie now if it failed to entice Stamkos. Would feel a lot more confident about great lottery odds with Bernier/Sparks.

It's not much consolation considering the contract he signed but for what it's worth...I don't think Andersen's that great.

I heard from a close friend of Stammer's (I live in Woodbrige) that after reading 166 pages on a local Leafs fan forum, Steve decided to stay in Tampa.

Didn't feel the love from the Toronto fans, his words, not mine.

The Red Wings by the way, would have loved to pitch Newport/Stamkos, but never got the chance this week.

Huh, that's a little surprising. Guessing there were only a handful of serious contenders.

If the Leafs decided to stay on a lower number for Stamkos to try and cap manage for a few years down the road then good on them. They made the best offer that the team would give and didn't go nuts just to sign him at any cost.  Tampa made a great deal to keep him, let's see how they do with their other guys coming up for UFA.

Heh heh. Nice. Someone will have to post that "mission accomplished" pic.

Well I'm not going to lie... I'm disappointed

And when Tampa gets knocked out of the Playoffs again, but this time in the 1st or 2nd round, he will also be disappointed... ;)

There really has to be something else to the story. Why wouldn't he have signed this a year ago?

Maybe his UFA offers weren't what he thought they might be?

Or maybe he just wanted to take as much time as possible and explore all options before making a life-altering decision?

It's another good reminder that Toronto means nothing to players in the NHL.  We don't wait for UFAs, we need to develop our own stars because they never leave to come here.

I guess it's still not yet safe in Toronto, for NHL players... but credit the Shanny-clan for not caving and offering 11+ to make it worth him coming to T.O.

Well, the best players are at least talking to the Leafs now, so I still consider that a step up.  :)

I wonder how Steve will like playing for Babcock at the World Cup...

Caving? He never got a chance to offer him anything.
