TSNBobMcKenzie: A settlement between PK Subban and MTL is imminent. New deal coming.

Well, that didn't take long. Be interesting to see what the details are.

Nonis blew it again

CanadiensMTL: Canadiens agree to terms on an 8-year contract with defenseman @PKSubban1.  DETAILS -> http://t.co/sNORuYhULh

Looks like the Habs came to their senses, unfortunately.

What a shame.  I'm guessing $8 mil AAV

Avg 9 million a year. If montreal hadn't tried to lowball him during negotiations they could probably had him for 8 per year , he was only asking 8.5 in arbitration

He was asking for $8.5M on a one year deal knowing he'd end up with another raise next summer. There was no way they were going to get him for less long-term.

Talks between the Canadiens and PK Subban agent, Don Meehan were back on this morning. #tvasports

My guess is Bergevin called and caved to the demands.

Sounds that way, or someone above Bergevin said to get it done.

Good for Subban, I'm glad he got paid. Guy deserves it. Gotta be honest though a small part of me was pretty excited about the Habs screwing this one up (and Subban potentially coming here in a couple of years)

I never expected him to sign with the Leafs, but the thought of him ditching the Habs without them getting anything in return was very appealing.

Sounds like Geoff Molson was heavily involved so Bergevin had to sign the deal after the arbitration bluff.

After all that nonsense chatter earlier today about him and Habs being on the outs you could have predicted he was actually about to sign a mega-deal.

I think the current trend of top player's long term deals having significantly higher AAV's than the ones signed pre-draft(as opposed to, say, the Getzlaf/Perry/Kessel deals) certainly makes the Phaneuf deal make a little more sense in terms of where he fits into the league hierarchy.

That was always the case. In 2 years he will be a steal of a deal. The same with phil's deal too imho.

Subban should be happy now.  He'll remain a Hab for the better part of his career.  Gives the Habs and Subban the piece of mind needed to get on and concentrate on the team now that the contract is out of the way.

Well, like I said, it wasn't always the case. Phaneuf at 7 in a league where players like Getzlaf and Perry get 8.2 and 8.6 didn't look like good value. Phaneuf in a league where elite players are getting 9 and 10.5 looks right.

That was always kind of the expectation, though. When Phaneuf signed his deal, lot of people said "wait until you see what guys like Subban and other top tier guys get this summer."
