Subban signs 8 year 72 million dollar contract

Well, like I said, it wasn't always the case. Phaneuf at 7 in a league where players like Getzlaf and Perry get 8.2 and 8.6 didn't look like good value. Phaneuf in a league where elite players are getting 9 and 10.5 looks right.

That was always kind of the expectation, though. When Phaneuf signed his deal, lot of people said "wait until you see what guys like Subban and other top tier guys get this summer."

Except like I said, that does run contrary to what we saw with Perry and Getzlaf who were the first two elite guys to sign big extensions in the new CBA. Their deals fit pretty comfortably into the salary structure established by guys like Crosby and Ovechkin.

So people might have been predicting that future deals would go into new territory and, well, now they look right but it certainly wasn't the case when the Phaneuf deal got signed.

It was a feeling of a  majority of fans who looked at the big picture. With the new cba and the cap being as much as 10-15 mill higher within a matter of years it only made sense that these long term deals will look sweeter and sweeter as time goes on. Nonis defiantly took this into consideration.

I laugh at the fact the habs could have had Subban at 6.5 x 6 but ended up paying him 9 mill because they tried to play hardball amd flopped.

Ok and, like I said, the people who said that look right now. That's great. But there were a ton of people who looked at that contract and said it looked good at the time, which isn't really true. It's not like we don't have threads on this board about the subject there's:

http://www.tmlfans.ca/community/ind...e threads, was what a lot of people thought.

Two years ago Montreal opted to push Subban into a short term deal for about $5M over the two year term rather than agree to a 5 year $25M deal.

In so doing they saved $5M over the two years but now will pay out a lot more over the next 3 years than they would have on the balance of that 5 years deal they turned down.

Not the best general managing....

Hindsight is always 20-20.  If someone didn't invest in Apple 10 years ago are they a bad investor?

For how long though? Phaneuf isn't getting any younger.

Only because he got better.  That is why they wanted a bridge deal.  It would be worse to lock up that kind of money with a player that busted.  Now that they know what kind of player he is I'm sure they are glad to pay norris type money for a norris type dman.

A good part of the job of a GM is talent evaluation.

Montreal mistake.
