The Habs Thread - Reloaded

Yeah, you guys won that one.  Not sure where Poile is going with his blueline thinking.  That whole problem could go kablooie on him.

I don't know if I'm willing to give this one to the Habs quite so easily. The best asset they received was the 2nd round pick, which is right around what Gill was worth. Slaney, as we know, is ECHL/AHL fodder and if Geoffrion wasn't related to Boom Boom, we'd be writing him off as another dime a dozen 3rd/4th line grinder type - you know, the type of guy you can usually get for a 5th round pick. I'd say this was a fair deal all around, no winners or losers.

Well, Gill was no critical piece going forward for them, so since they got some younger assets I'd say they win.  No claims to blockbusterality, of course.

What baffles me is what Poile is thinking here.  Is he going to move Suter before the deadline?  Does he think he can keep Weber after next year?  Is he going to make a real push this year and hang on to both for the time being?  Adding Gill, who would need to be re-signed, just seems odd.

I think you're reading too much into this move. He added some veteran depth to his blueline for a playoff run, plain and simple. They have a young blueline. Gill is an upgrade on either Hillen or Bouillon and gives them a big bodied, steady presence to pair with Ellis. There's no real impact from this move on their decisions regarding Suter or Weber.

3 prospects for Gill...two of which are fairly big forwards is a good deal for the Habs all-in-all.

Calling Slaney a prospect is being very generous to him. He can't even hold onto a spot on an AHL roster.

What would be a more fair description of him?

Exactly what I called him in my previous post - ECHL/AHL fodder.

In fact, when his contract expires at the end of this season, I won't be surprised if he's not re-signed. Part of what Nashville acquired in this trade was another opening on their Reserve list.

Okay, so we get 2 prospects and a pseudo-prospect.  I still like the deal for les Habs.

I never said it was a bad deal for the Habs, just that I don't see a winner or a loser on this one. I'd call it fair for both sides.

Assuming that turns out to be true, he probably won't play 40 games next season for the Habs, so they won't be giving up the 5th round pick anyway.

I'd give the early decision on this one to the Habs too.

Sure, but if he doesn't play 40 games for the Habs next season, how much value does he actually hold? After next season, it will have been 7 years since he was drafted. If he hasn't stuck with an NHL full time by then, the odds are against him being able to do so in the future. In which case, they will have given up Gill for a 2nd round pick (his fair value) and 2 reserve list spots for guys that couldn't crack an NHL lineup on a regular basis.

If you traded Gill would you rather get a 2nd only or a 2nd and Blake Geoffrion?

In all honesty, I don't see enough difference in the value of the two offers to make much of a difference to me. I'd take the extra asset because it's an extra asset, but, that's really the only reason. Though, I suppose the Bulldogs need players as well . . .

Between Montreal and Hamilton the Habs have 14 injuries so the bodies were important to keep both teams rolling.

That's another contract that counts towards the 50 as well..

Yeah, I noted that earlier, but, it's also another expiring contract, and being that the Habs aren't buyers right now, it's not a huge issue to them. Really, Geoffrion is pretty close to being a non-asset. Acquiring him seems to be more of a PR move than one that adds value to the product on the ice.

On the surface this looks like a fair deal for the Habs -  I thought the Habs would cash in on Gill if they decided to move him and this one scores a resounding meh.... in terms of leverage / covering his ass Poille wins this deal - nice move
