A replacement USB wi-fi stick, about $10.

Thanks, but that would mean having to pay for another data plan, right?

No, it's just a wi-fi adapter that plugs into your USB port instead of being internal in your computer.

I picked up an iPad 2 yesterday as my laptop has been slowly dying. It came charged at 84% and I gave it a full charge and started using it. I have logged quite a few hours on it already and I, only at 34% battery, very happy with it.

The reason I went with the iPad 2 is I don't need a ton of features for what I do, mainly surfing the net and playing the basic games, so the $100 price difference had me convinced to not get on a waiting list for the iPad 3. Money well spent!

No, the USB stick just replaces the non-functioning hardware. You would connect to a wifi router the same as you normally would (entering username and password for new networks.)

Does anyone know of good free website for video conversion? I discovered filsh.net that will convert youtube vids to MP4s (and other formats) for free but the only problem with it is it'll only do vids up to 20 minutes long...

This program is free and will convert streaming videos:

Are you just looking for something that converts youtube videos? Check out jdownloader. It's mostly used for downloading from file-sharing websites but it can only be used for that.

Thanks Bull... Carlton, it doesn't just have to be youtube. Basically, I'm prepping for the firewall at work. I want to be able to pull crap off the internet at home from my playbook (using my wifi there) and convert it to MP4s so I can watch them later at work (or wherever.)

Looking at a new laptop. Have everything pretty much nailed down, but I have a choice on the chip and wanted to get opinions from the more tech-minded among us. Both options come with 6GB of dual channel DDR RAM.

a) Intel i3-2350M at 2.3 Ghz
b) Intel i5-2450M at 2.5 Ghz with the ability to boost to 3.1

Am I really going to notice enough of a difference between these?

What will you be using the laptop for?  It's likely that the i5 is  quad core and the i3 is dual core.  Anything requiring more multi-threaded or multi-tasked performance will benefit from the i5.

Both of the chips he mentioned are dual cores.

The i7 chip was not an available option with this system. As for what I'm going to be using it for, it will be mostly email and web browising. There will probably be some streaming videos as well but no gaming. I was looking at this system because I didn't think I would benefit from the i7. My last laptop lasted 7 years so it would be nice to see similar life span in a new system.

What's the price difference between the chips?

Question:

My house has ethernet in all the rooms. I also want wireless. The Rogers modem is wireless but since it is in the basement, the signal is very weak upstairs. I have bought a LinkSys router. Can I plug the router in one of the ethernet jacks upstairs so I can connect to it wirelessly?

Yes, the router can be connected to any ethernet port to provide wireless service to the rest of the house

Is there any special setup I need to do on the router or on Rogers modem re ip address or gateways?
