Tim Leiweke appointed new President and CEO of MLSE

Source tells me there's a "very big chance" Wayne Gretzky will become a top executive in Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment.

Sources tell me Berger's an idiot and probably got the scoop watching TSN or Sportsnet.  In reality I see it happening, but I think Berger is a jerk and a Leaf hater.

I think the problem that's always existed with the Gretzky to Toronto rumours has been that it's never really been explained what he'd actually be doing and I think that's in part because there's really nowhere he fits. He's not a successful business executive so it seems unlikely that the heavily corporate MLSE is going to bring him in and give him any real authority in that sense and he doesn't have a great record as a sports executive so it seems unlikely that they'd give him any sort of authority over Nonis or the hockey team so what does that leave? Some sort of out-front community role maybe but, I mean, honestly if you're Wayne Gretzky do you want to leave what I'm sure is a pretty nice retirement to...cut ribbons and kiss babies? Gretzky, to his credit, seems like a guy who would want to actually do something.

I couldn't have said it better, I feel that's how it boils down on this issue.

Tom Anselmi has resigned as COO. I guess he and Leiweke did not see eye to eye.

Was only a matter of time although I figured he would be pushed and not jump. Was probably given the option.

Not a fan of Anselmi once he was given power over the actual teams. His record with TFC was beyond abysmal. I think he did a lousy job of handling the Burke firing and was a bit spineless with the board.

This news has gone over well on some soccer forums I visit. He gets a lot of blame for TFC's lack of success.

The TFC has been a disaster of massive proportions from the get-go. Not only have they never made the playoffs but they've had 8 coaches in 7 seasons! The team's been run by 3, soon to be 4 general managers, yes, in only 7 seasons. Anselmi's largely been in charge of this disaster and I'm glad he's gone.

A change for the better, for both the Leafs and the TFC.  Now we can finally say 'out with the old and in with the new'.  A little more optimism comes to us fans.

I'm sorry Tom, you've been saying the same thing for years, you haven't brought any winning element to the table, only a losing way. Also, I don't feel you have the backbone strong enough to partake in public scrutiny as much as the worst candidate available for your spot right now.. maybe a lesson in PR is in order for you?

Tom ... You're Fired...

The toughest yet in his career...being CEO of MLSE and the  expectations he brings to create a winning & more positive attitude (not to mention results), in an attempt at transforming the franchises from losers to winners...

"For me it?s been the hardest time in my career,? says Leiweke.

?With AEG it?s been 19 years of building?the only rebuild was the Kings. You come here and you?re immediately thrust into rebuilding two out of the three [teams] and you?re trying to rebuild the corporate structure of the parent company as well. I?ve never had three different processes where you were trying to learn, educate, process and define and fix at once.?

We have to win,? says Leiweke while perched on a bar stool in an upstairs suite at Real Sports Saturday morning, shortly after hosting a meet-and-greet with angry TFC fans. ?We can?t separate Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment from the teams. We have to stand up and say: As the teams go, so go the organization.?

?I think there was a theory here where we were a great sports organization but that the GMs haven?t done a good job with the teams. Nope. We are the teams. This community wants to buy Leafs tickets. They want to buy Raptors tickets. They don?t want to buy MLSE tickets. If these teams don?t do well, then we?re not a great organization and we shouldn?t kid ourselves ? It?s the Leafs, it?s the Raptors and it?s TFC. How they do is our report card."

...we have to win. I don?t know how long that will take. I don?t know anyone who can predict that, but I do know that I have to hang in here and finish what we just began.?

...his primary goal since he arrived has been to allow an organization beaten down by losing to think big again, at least beyond profits.

"We have a shot to be great here,? he says. ?Don?t be afraid. We?ve been afraid of dreaming a little bit. We?ve been so polarized by our lack of success with the teams that people have been afraid to have a vision and afraid to have a passion and afraid to have a dream."

Anthony Petrielli of MLHS has an excellent quote from Leiweke after home opener.

?I knew the Leafs were important but I didn?t know they were this important. I understand the passion for those damn pictures now.?

I guess, to experience opening night, Saturday night in Toronto must be an eye-opener for a guy from southern California, eh?

I guess I'll give him credit for his mistake, but, really, shouldn't he have made more of an effort to get to know what he was dealing with before he started making his pronouncements?

I still don't know what the big deal was. I thought it was a good idea actually, but if I've learned one thing over the years, it's to cater to your client base whenever possible.

Lei-weke you're so fine, you're so fine you blow my mind Lei-weke!
