Training Camp - Sept 11

I suspect Sportsnet, LeafsTV, and radio 590 will have media scrums of General Manager David Nonis (11:15 am) and Head Coach Randy Carlyle (11:45 am).

Before a large scrum, Paul Ranger went around and introduced himself to all of the media with a firm handshake. Why? "It's respect."

Paul Ranger brings huge amount of class. Having so many yougsters on the team, good to have him around.

Great, Lupul is already missing time with back spasms.

I don't understand how professional athletes whose only job is to be in great physical condition can have several months off under the supervision of doctors and training staff, and yet still start camp injured.  Some people really are made of glass.

The Lupul back spasms are worrying, given his history with back issues.

Hope it's something in nothing.

Temporarily Kuli may be moved-up to 2nd unit and either a defensive minded Marlie (D?AMigo, Ashton) or Raymond takes his role on the third.

Until these guys get on the ice doing game scenario type things, I don't think they are "up to speed" in the summer regardless of how much they're working out. We always hear about these kinds of issues in the first week of camp, mostly groins and spasms IIRC. I'm not too worried about it.

I wouldn't be ordinarily BWB, but with his previous extremely serious back problems, it's a little worrying.

I'm trying to be positive, you know, what you think about, you manifest. Isn't that quantum mechanic'y? I'm not a astrophysicist so I could be wrong about that, or maybe it was just some bad mushrooms.

Here's a couple of articles about Ranger that are very well done. I don't think they've been posted anywhere here yet:

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/paul-rangers-sheds-tears-of-joy-at-toronto-maple-leafs-training-camp/

And here's one that was written about a year ago when Ranger joined the Marlies. It looks a little at his career prior to leaving Tampa:

When Ranger first joined the Marlies I was very excited. So I couldn't be happier now that he's getting a chance to make the big club.

Nice story, but he neglected to tell us one of the most important elements of being an NHL player- Emotion, and he appears to have plenty of that. Looking forward to watching him complete his comeback. Really good veteran addition to this team.

I've been very curious as well. Someday maybe he'll feel like sharing.

In the meantime, I'm very excited to have him on the team. I hope he's able to excel and sticks around.

I can't ever remember being this pumped for an NHL season to get underway. I truly believe we 'could' be seeing the start of something special on the ice this year for the Leafs. There's a lot of young talent on this team, especially at the back end.

Bring it on!

The quote in the Ranger article where it's said that hockey has it backwards explains it all.  Many of us "drift" in our 20s, but what we really do is probe, experiment, try to figure out who we are and might be as adults.  In elite hockey, there's no chance for any of that.  He just needed unstructured time to explore and find out what he wanted.

I'm still happily drifting...
