Training Camp - Sept 11

The quote in the Ranger article where it's said that hockey has it backwards explains it all.  Many of us "drift" in our 20s, but what we really do is probe, experiment, try to figure out who we are and might be as adults.  In elite hockey, there's no chance for any of that.  He just needed unstructured time to explore and find out what he wanted.

That's a good way of putting it. We often under-estimate the toll that stress can have on a pro athlete.

Carlyle mentions Frazer McLaren killed penalties in the minors and could get a chance on the PK this year.

I had a feeling that our PK would fall a bit this season but I didn't expect it to be for reasons like this.

I'm also fully aware that this doesn't mean that he'll even play a second on the penalty kill this season, but nothing he did last season made me think that guy needs a substantially larger role. And of our two facepunchers he's the one I like more.

Not that I expect it to happen for more than a handful of shifts over the course of the season or anything, but it would be great if McLaren could actually contribute on the PK. That would mean there'd only be one completely useless forward getting into the lineup on a regular basis.

I would used him on PP instead. Park him in front of net. He would be almost immovable. Perfect screen.

And it would be nice to have another forward who is capable of playing on the penalty kill. Last season we only used 5 on a regular basis (McClement, Bozak, Kulemin, JVR, and Komarov). Komarov is gone but he's replaced by Bolland so we still have 5. But none of the other forwards on the team have taken a regular PK shift really in their careers. If McClement is going to continue playing the amount that he does there, it won't really be that much of an issue but it would still be nice to have a 6th guy just in case.

That's another big reason why I hope Raymond sticks. While he's never logged a ton of PK time, he was a regular contributor there in Vancouver.

I'm sure he'd block his fair share of shots.

Hey, I'm trying.  :P

Leafs make their first camp cuts. Five players sent back to junior (Brown, Herzog, Verhaeghe, Finn, Bibeau) and Rupert/Murphy released.

I'm surprise a little Finn didn't get any exhibition games in.

Finn hurt his shoulder in the Rookie camp and has not been medically cleared, likely why he was sent back to junior to rehab.

Great, Lupul is already missing time with back spasms.

I don't understand how professional athletes whose only job is to be in great physical condition can have several months off under the supervision of doctors and training staff, and yet still start camp injured.  Some people really are made of glass.

To be fair the back is a tricky beast. There really aren't exercises to make it stronger and there's no easy way to fix a wonky one.

I can validate this with experience. "Tricky Beast" is a good way to label it. I've also found that disks don't regenerate themselves.

I don't know what Lupul's problem is, but I can say that I'm convinced that once you hurt it, it's never the same again. It's a daily war, only the battles vary.

You must not go to the gym much.  There are plenty of exercises to make your back stronger.

Its different when you're referring to vertebrae and not back muscles.

I started having a bad back about 10 years ago. Since then I have lost 90 pounds, worked with Pilates and yoga and go to the gym regularly. I stretch every day, visit the chiropractor regularly, get massage and work on core strengthening exercises. In spite of all of this, sometimes my back still flares up. It just happens. I know what to do when it flares up and it always calms back down again without too much of an inconvenience.

Some people just have back problems. Problems that may go back to an early age or even to birth. I cannot imagine how hard it must be for Lupul to feel so physically ready to go, but also know that he has to hold back to let his back settle down.

I am certain that he has the resources and the desire to do all that can possibly be done to mitigate his back problems. For some people, it is something they just have to live with.

Fraser mclaren goes to x-ray for a possible broken finger after getting slashed. #TMLtalk

aw, shucks

A Carter Ashton slash eh? I guess there's more than one way to secure a spot on the big club.

Am I in the minority if I'm hoping that Colborne makes it as a winger or centre over Ashton? I just feel he has way more skill (his passing is elite IMO).
