Training Camp: September 16 - October 1

I'm surprised at two things; that Greg Scott didn't get sent to the AHL and that Heard didn't at least earn an EL from the Leafs.

Scott will be gone in the next round of cuts. They still need extra bodies to manage the schedule for the next few games, and he's one of the older forwards with AHL experience, so I guess they figure he'll be a better fit for now. As for Heard, the fact that he didn't get into either of the games was not a good sign for his chances of getting a deal. He might still be able to snag a contract with the Marlies, but, he's not worth using up a reserve list spot on.

I guess not, but I thought he played pretty well. I hope they maybe offer him an AHL deal. Like Devane, it would have been nice to see what he could have done against some NHL talent in one of these games. I'd be willing to bet they would have showed better than Scott did last night.

@mirtle: All of the players the Leafs cut had a jersey number of 44 or higher, and everyone 73 and up - not named Kessel or Grabovski - was cut. The lesson? Ask for a low number in camp.

You mean some of these guys had a choice? Awfully generous, IMO.

Perhaps this was mentioned earlier and it's a little late suggesting it considering the pre-season games are well underway, but I found it strange that the teams only had basically a weekened to practice before being thrown right into game action.

Not only am I concerned about the team not having sufficient time to learn the system (considering the new players and coaches), but is there not bound to be a rash of injuries from players who are over-exerting themselves without the proper build up time?  I know the majority have been training throughout the summer, but a couple more days wouldn't have hurt I would think.

Yeah, it doesn'r make much sence... Like I sais, it's just 2+ weeks of me holding my breath that nobody gets hurt. I don't like the pre-season at all. - Even when it's more carefully thought out.

I think he was just kidding around.

Yeah, the numbers part is true, but def. kidding about the lower number bit.

Based on pre-season so far, I'd have to think that Gardiner is making things interesting for the opening night line up decisions. Also Dupuis vs Boyce and Kadri vs Frattin are hard picks right now.

I would expect that Frattin, Kadri, Gardiner, Boyce and Dupuis will make it past the cuts today and will be the guys left standing to fill in the cracks and get more time to prove themselves in the last few games before October 6th rolls around.

I think that Lashoff will likely be sent down, thanks to the young Gardiner. I also believe that Crabb has done nothing to keep himself with the big club. Most of the other cuts today will probably be no surprise.

Lombardi coming in and being cleared for contact adds in an interesting twist for the above boys vying for a spot on the roster. Burke might have to be forced into a move, to make all this work out.

Players that caught my attention, while probably not sticking around today were Mikus, Colborne and Scrivens. I thought all of those guys had a very good camp and will certainly be in the mix in the coming year or two. It's nice to see all this depth.

It will be interesting as to what moves Burke would consider. It appears right now that most spots are solidified? Who would he consider moving at this point, and for what in return?

Sounds like Ziggy's been given some bad news:

In this fall, I'm going to take my talents down to Ricoh Coliseum and join the Toronto Marlies

So there's probably some more cuts coming soon.

If I were him, the only move I would consider on the back end is Komisarek and he'd have to take what he could get there.
On the forward lines though, he could have a bit more depth to play with. If a top line center becomes available, he would have to consider any player, but Connolly would have to be the player that loses his spot IMO. I know you don't really sign a player usually, only to trade, demote or whatever, but I wouldn't really want to lose any of our younger players, as it would hamper what we're trying to do. Connolly is only a stop gap and only that because there wasn't another option available for us.

I'm thinking a two for one deal or something like that to help get numbers down. That deal will be hard to make though I think. The player we'd need would probably take 3 roster players/ prospects and some picks.

I'm a little surprised that Lashoff is still around. He really doesn't have a chance at sticking around unless a) someone is traded or b) the Leafs plan on carrying 8 defenceman, neither of which are likely in my opinion. They might just want an extra defenceman in camp though for logistical purposes.

I didn't think Lashoff really earned the chance to stick, but not really a surprise though. He has to pass through waivers right? No harm in keeping him around to give him another chance. I wonder if Burke is looking to deal him or another with Gardiner proving more than worthy of first call-up?
