Training Camp Thread

Why is it such a bad idea to keep one of Orr or McLaren around for the odd game?  There will be games where the opposition will try to manhandle the Leafs so having one of the brutes in the stable for situations like that seems like a good idea to me.

As everyday players, their times have past.  As "just in case" I think they still have value.

Because history has shown that having guys like Orr or McLaren in the lineup doesn't serve to prevent those situations, and it may, in fact, exacerbate them.

Pretty surprised with the Holzer thing...I hope they get Percy into more games than a prototypical 7th d-man.

Pretty slim. Similar guys have cleared with no problems. It wouldn't shock me is someone claimed him, but, it's still very much in the "doubtful" column.

Meanwhile, Frattin and Ashton were spotted getting extra training from Barb Underhill on how to throw fast punches  :D

Well, I'm surprised. I'd have thought Orr would have made the roster for sure and, to some extent, I think there's a spot of wisdom in him doing so provided he never actually played.

Still, a refreshing change to see. Hopefully this means we won't see the 4th line as marginalized as it was.

No mention of Kontiola, but its assumed he's been sent packing. I don't see him on the final roster list.

He was assigned to the Marlies a couple of weeks ago was he not?

Yesssss.  Good job Randy and Dave.

Oh to be a fly on the wall during the meeting this decision was made.

You'd hope that the discussion was entirely straightforward.  I mean, good on them for making an obvious decision and all.

Is this real life? Smart decisions being made by the Leafs? I don't understand.

Just the difference in the number of points the 4th line could contribute this season relative to last season's should be fairly significant.  Obviously no 4th line is going to light it up, but the Leafs had to have had one of the worst offensive outputs from their 4th line in the league.

Bob McKenzie says the expectation is Nylander will be assigned to Sweden.

I guess I'd rather see him the AHL but OTOH he hasn't proved himself in the SEL yet.

Leafs practice lines:
JVR-Bozak-Kessel;
Lupul-Kadri-Kozun;
Komarov-Santorelli-Clarkson;
Winnik-Holland-Frattin
... Ashton, Leivo

This is encouraging.

Very!
That Kozun is working out seems to allow the choices to be made easier down the depth chart.  If he can truly be a second line player, that gives us a good third line and makes one more guy expendable that otherwise would have had to be on opening night.

I'm happy with Kozun's play in the preseason, and am glad he's getting a chance to start the regular season. He's still got a lot to prove though. Plenty of players have impressed in training camp only to fizzle out. That right side below Kessel is going to see a lot of change in the next 82 games. Kozun, Clarkson, Frattin, Ashton, Leivo, and Booth will all be rotated in and out of the line-up and through those 3 spots.
