Speaking of Loov:

Michael Traikos @Michael_Traikos  ?  1h
Loov's situation is complicated. Dubas said if he doesn't make #Leafs, he probably has to be returned to Sweden because of contract status.

Too bad, I thought he was definitely playing in North America this season. Although when you think about it it may not be the worst thing for him. He's probably a 5/6/7 defenceman with the Marlies this season while in Sweden he'll likely play in a top-4 role.

Wonder what the deal is there, basically every article that mentioned him said he'd likely be playing with the Marlies.  Guess no one did any research on his status/talked to the Leafs?

I like Traikos so I don't want to harp on him, but he tweeted during the game yesterday that he didn't know Loov could hit, which is kind of funny as it's definitely something he's known for. So yeah, it wouldn't surprise me if they just assumed he'd be staying here.

And Traikos actually has a column from today I believe about Loov and (unless it's been edited since) the article states he'll likely be with the Marlies.

Sucks if he can't play in the AHL here though.

I do understand what you are all saying is that the 7th sits and watches but how likely if one of the defenseman go down in the first 10-15 games, its then I would like to see a Loov or Granberg play.
In any case I don't think Loov will be suited to play in Sweden, it would far benefit him in the AHL this year if he doesnt crack the big team.

With Nylander, can he play a number of games before the Leafs need to move him?  I'm thinking about the less that 10 scenario we sometimes see with young players going back to Junior.

As skilled as the guy is, our group thought that he could really benefit from adding 20-25 pounds of upper body muscle. The guy is going to be great one day.

I'm not sure since he isn't required to go back to any team if he wishes not to. I wonder if he can bounce up and down from the AHL, although I'd rather him play in the AHL one year.

So if he is the go to guy we need in case of injury, then I rather him playing with the Marlies every day and ready for a call up and in a better position to help out then somebody spending weeks in the press box mildewing and not game ready.  You see it all the time in the NHL, your 7th d is not always the guy that fills in for any length of time in the case of injury.  They are more the guys that come in if somebody needs a rest every so often over the long haul of the season or if you are on a road trip and you need an injury replacement until maybe a guy like Loov can hook up with you on the road.  The only Marlie I would be happy with as a 7th D is Holzer who at the age of 26 isn't in the Leaf's long term plans anyway.

Yes, his contract can still slide as long as he doesn't play 10 NHL games. So even if he plays in the AHL all season and gets called up here and there we won't be burning a year off his contract.

Dave Morrison said that he's 5'11, 183lbs in July. And at the risk of sounding creepy, pictures from the combine show that the guy is definitely in shape. I would imagine that his optimal playing weight would be at around 190-195lbs, so he's not far off from that.

I am getting a bit confused about some conflicting information I am reading. Does anyone know definitively if Loov cannot or can play for the Marlies?

Not all the information seems to be out there. But from the sounds of it he still has a year left on his contract with his Swedish team. That contract has an NHL out-clause which allowed him to come over to North America and try-out for the Leafs. It seems as though if he doesn't make the big club his SHL contract dictates that he must return to Sweden and finish out his contract over there.

This is from today as well:
