Unofficial 2013-2014 Armchair GM Thread

Free agent Jonas Hiller doesn't think he'll be back for Ducks next season.

In a lot of ways this guy would be a perfect backup for Bernier. I wonder what kind of money he's going to be asking for?

He's going to be looking for starters money on a team where he can be the starter.

Hey Millar is looking for work?.seriously  I think Macintyre can do an adequate job at back up.  Many goalies have not found the bigs until there early 30's and we get him dirt cheap.

Armchair GM feature on @capgeek  has Colton Orr demoted 165 times, next highest total? 63.

Give the people what they want!

Interesting.  Even I, who have been a huge supporter of Orr and his style of play, realize the 80's goon is done and fighting is between to competitors on the spur of the moment NOT a staged thing to see who has the toughest knuckle dragger.

My fantasy lineup does not include Orr at all and puts McLaren in the press box.

4th line centre spot for next year.

komarov...or is he a better winger
kulemin...played some centre this past year but probably wants too much money, or will maybe go to pitts and play with malkin
promote a kid?  we don't have any great grinding/energy centres in the minors

or sign a ufa (steve ott maybe?)

McKegg.  I think he needs another year of AHL though.

Komarov is my hope.  A 4th line of D'Amigo/Komarov/Ashton has good potential.

I don't think Komarov's played centre in a long time. And I remember him saying at some point last season that he preferred the wing.

Wasn't he playing there quite a bit last season?

Michael_Traikos: Leo Komarov's agent is in T.O. for draft combine. Says client will play in NHL and looking for long-term deal. Leafs still No 1 choice.

C'mon Nonis, sign him! Whatever it will take!

Yeah, the people who want him for 2 years and 2 million are going to end up disappointed I think.

So it might come down to Komarov vs. Kulemin?

Probably, but, I'm also not sure he'll command much more than that. Maybe $3M for 3 instead.

I like Komarov a lot, but...that's a bit steep for a guy who's a 4th line player, who can play on your 3rd in a pinch.  I'm willing to give him some term (3 years?  4 years?), but the cap hit shouldn't be more than $2.

Sure, but I think that reaction is based on thinking that unrestricted free agency works in a very different way than it actually does. Giving Clarkson the contract the Leafs did never really made sense either but spoke to what I think are three key inflationary elements in free agency. One, that teams will overpay for "intangibles" provided they think they're the right intangibles for their team. Two, teams will overpay just about anyone if they're the best X on the market where X can literally be anything up to and including enforcer. Finally, I think there's a bit of an attitude where so long as the salary isn't in and of itself a relatively high NHL salary then teams sort of don't care how much they pay someone(and, to some extent, it doesn't matter).

Right? Like if 30 teams think Komarov is worth 2 million dollars a year then he'll get more than 2 million a year. That's just the way it goes.

To everyone saying they want the Leafs to re-sign Leo Komarov, understand it will cost top-6 money for a bottom-6 forward. Worth it?

I'm not so sure about that. I mean, if he's looking for top 6 type money, he's not going to be playing in the NHL. I mean, I like the guy a lot, but I don't think he's shown anywhere close to enough for an NHL team to give him what most people would consider top 6 dollars. He'll come in at around $3M per, which is 3rd line money these days.

I'm not sure either but I'd say that when it comes to the new brand of free agency we should be prepared for more and more reactions to Clarkson-type deals from the league. Three million a year makes sense to me as reasonable which is why I wouldn't be surprised to see his deal exceed that from anywhere from 1 to 1.5 million.
