Varlamov Arrested

For real Russia???

A Russian government official is claiming that Varlamov's arrest is part of a scheme to prevent Russia from winning the gold medal in men's hockey at next year's Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

"I'm confident of Semyon's innocence," Russian parliamentarian Igor Ananskikh told a Russian news agency R-Sport. "I think it is a sports and political move, as Varlamov is a candidate for the Russian national team. The main goal is to suspend him from training and games so that he loses practice and misses the Olympics."

How soon before Ovechkin gets framed for murder? ::)

I read that the league has the authority to suspend a player facing criminal charges. So even if he's released and is able to travel, Bettman could step in.

Yeah, though, my guess is they won't until they have a better idea what his involvement may or may not have been, etc.

Next Avs games is Friday in Dallas. Varlamov is in jail until at least the morning when he can see a judge. You have to wonder if he will be given travel restrictions - even if he can travel domestically it is not crazy to think, he might have to surrender his passport and not travel internationally until they sort this out.

The Avs have been lights out and this guy has been a big part of the success. How this plays out could have an affect on the team.

If he really do this stuff, he's gotta be one of the stupidest athletes and human being in the world.  When everything is going right for you, why go and mess it up like this?  Dumb dumb dumb.

DENVER - Colorado Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov will be allowed out of jail and be able to travel with the team while prosecutors consider charging him in a domestic violence case.

Varlamov is accused of assaulting his girlfriend, kicking her in the chest and dragging her by the hair.

He appeared in court Thursday dressed in a yellow jail jumpsuit. A judge set his bond at $5,000, and his lawyer said he would be able to post that immediately.

Denver County Judge Claudia Jordan ordered Varlamov to stay away from his girlfriend and not contact her.

Varlamov also was ordered to relinquish any firearms in his possession. He said through his lawyer he didn't have any guns.

Charges have been dropped. Quote from the DA's spokesperson.
"This is not an indication that we didn't believe our victim," Kimbrough said. "It is ... simply not having the ability to prove it."

I know rumors aren't welcomed but there was a questionable trade lately in Colorado that plays a role in this case.
