Western Conference Final: San Jose vs. St. Louis

Binnington's the better goalie right now. St. Louis just has to rely on their shot share and it's in the bag.

Jones has been solid for San Jose since crapping the bed in the first few games against Vegas.

Should be a great series. Torn on this one. Would like to see Bozak, Steen and Gunnar do well but wouldn't mind Joe winning one. Topo bad Marleau isn't with them. Leafs should trade him to SJ immediately. Won't be eligible to play but will be part of the team ;)

A missed hand pass leads directly to an overtime goal for the Sharks.

Watching it live I said right away to my wife that it was a hand pass and it should have been blown dead.  Like, how could all four officials miss that?  Inexcusable.

It's not like it was even a tip off his glove.  He full on swatted it.

Meier looked obfuscated by both Blues defensemen and goalie in the refs and linesmen sightlines. Rough situation for everyone involved, except the Sharks.

They didn't see it and it's not reviewable. Maybe they should review all playoff goals or third period and beyond.

The easiest solution to this problem is to just make hand passes legal. I can't think of a single reason why it shouldn't be.

The league should really go through the rule book point by point and do a thorough review of everything in it to see if anything can be updated/changed. There are rules in there that are decades old that can be changed that wouldn't change the game in any way really (like getting rid of the stupid 2 minutes for bleeding rule).

I could imagine a lot of broken bones for centremen using their hands on the draw. Hand pass yes but not on draws?

Why would that happen? Hand passes are already allowed in the defensive zone and I can't recall any broken bones from plays like that.

Yeah. Most NHL players are smart enough to not use their hands on faceoffs with any sort of regularity.

The bigger issue to me is why the rules don't allow the league to step in and say "no that doesn't count".

Because, one of the few issues the league has been absolutely clear on is what kind of situations are reviewable. They also don't want to take so much out of the hands of the on-ice officials.

A reasonable case can be made that every play that results with the puck in the net should be reviewable - not challengeable, but at the officials' discretion. On most nights, there'd be nothing to review, but it would help prevent situations like this - though, I also agree with CtB that maybe hand passes should be legal to an extent. Batting the puck out of the air with your hand shouldn't mean your teammates can't touch it.
