Crazy that Carlyle is the first coach the Leafs have hired who has a Cup win.

Well... They brought back Punch Imlach to coach in 1980, and he won cups as the coach in the 60s.

I'm probably remembering what I read wrong.

I think Ron Maclean said it was the first coach in 32 years to be behind the Leaf bench who a Cup.

Yup first guy since 1980 who's got a coached Cup win under his belt before joining the Leafs

Leafs officially announce Dave Farrish added to their coaching staff.

In the small world of hockey, Eakins credited Farrish & Carlyle for helping him along the way when he was hired by the Leafs in 2006:

"As the years progressed in my playing career, I just always found myself spending time with guys in trying to help them,'' he says. "I liked working with younger guys and helping them get better and get on with their careers.

"It's gratifying. You go home and plunk yourself on the couch and you really feel good about being a good influence.''

Rod Langway, Randy Carlyle and Dave Farrish had done the same with him.

Carlyle coached Eakins in Winnipeg and Farrish coached Eakins in Moncton.

As I mentioned before, Farrish & Carlyle were dmen paired together for three season with the Sudbury Wolves. Farrish put up a few more points than Carlyle over those three seasons and was drafted #24 overall by the Rangers, 4 places ahead of Leafs pick, Carlyle.

Farrish bounced around the NHL a little including playing most of three of seasons with the Leafs.

Classy remarks by Eakins on the coaching change "Carlyle an excellent choice"

Anybody know if they are going to turf the strength and conditioning staff (Anthony Belza?)

These guys looked like they've been gassed since the All Star break.

Also, don't think it's a coincidence that Luke Schenn has looked so slow since their hiring in 2009.

Schenn had one year under Matt Nichol correct?

Well, Schenn had two injuries that offseason that needed attention, one to his eye which wasn't of consequence to training but he couldn't do much with his knee that summer and it showed the next year on top of being a sophomore.

I think his troubles are more between the ears than anything else, fwiw.

i really think schenn will benefit a lot from the coaching change..i felt like schenn just didn't fit into wilson's game plan ...i don't think the coaching change is a cure all..but i guess i won't be surprised if schenn starts to look a lot more like his old self under the change

You should see a lot of guys improving because of this change. Guys will now know what their role is, and what the expectations are. It may take a week or two, but, it will probably be too late by then.

Incidentally, unless I have missed something, Wilson hasn't had an interview with the media since his departure. Maybe he blames them for the last 3+ seasons for the Leafs dismal campaigns. Maybe he's been muzzled.

I really enjoyed watching him talk last night post-game, very candid and still supportive of his players.

Agreed.  Carlyle's post game talks are so refreshing after the flippant talks Wilson would give.

I don't expect nicety after getting fired, but it really reminds me of a stark contrast between what Paul Maurice would do when fired.  I really can't say that I feel remotely sorry for Wilson getting fired.

I guess we can all agree it was not Wilson after all. Burke has put himself in a bad spot now because the only guy left to blame.... is him.

Yeah Wilson gets 3 1/2 years and Carlyle is a bust after a few weeks.

This attitude is exactly what I was trying to warn against when people were calling for Wilson's head in order to "save the season." It usually takes at least a month before a team starts to turn things around under a new coach. Carlyle hasn't even been behind the Leafs' bench for 3 weeks.

Well, I can't really speak to Wilson like that but with a coaching change that involves a real different philosophy, style and approach I don't think you can nail that down easily in so few games. That's a transition that'll take some time to really judge fairly.

I am more than content to give Carlyle a lot more time to see if he can get these guys playing a more complete game. It will take a while for these guys to completely turn their style of play around. It may even work out better that way. We will see.
