Winnik traded to Pittsburgh

Zack Sill is nothing, 26 year old undrafted centre, 3 pts in 40 games, UFA at seasons end.

Pretty much as good a return as possible for Winnik.  Sill is a nothing throw-in, probably for cap/contract limit reasons or something.

UFA at the end of the season, $550k cap hit. So yeah, likely just a contracts thing. Would have liked a 2nd rounder this season but two picks is nice.

So Winnik, Santorelli, Franson for a 1st, 2nd, 4th and Leipsec. Maybe another late round pick if Olli Jokinen gets dealt.

reporterchris: My mistake: The #leafs retained 50% of Daniel Winnik's contract.

I find that a little surprising, as it means the Leafs currently are doing so on the maximum 3 contracts, but, since tow of them expire this season, I suppose it's not a significant issue. Just means, if anyone with term is moved before the draft, it will be at full price.

Count me surprised. I was optimistic he'd get a 2nd rounder, but a 4th as well is a good return.

The optimist in me was hoping for a 2nd + a 2nd or 3rd rounder or Burmistrov, since guys like Winnik are valued very highly around this time. Still, I won't be doing any complaining about this.

Yeah I read on Twitter it's around 150 K retained.

That's pretty smart flexing of their financial muscle though. It makes someone like Winnik available to more teams and a more valuable asset. It limits them moving a big contract at the deadline, I guess, but I think the chances there were pretty remote anyway.

I hope these early trades are paving the way for something big (and good) to happen on trade deadline day, but my gut feeling says nothing exciting will transpire.

Does it strike anyone else as maybe being a touch odd that Winnik was worth a second and a fourth and Santorelli was only worth a prospect that, charitably, is about equivalent to a second? Or is this further evidence of just how unwilling teams are to part with 1st rounders and that trade was more of a package deal than we've assumed?
