Winnik traded to Pittsburgh

Pretty much free assets, so I like it.

Yeah. And it's a sound strategy, providing they can find more UFA guys like Santo and Winnik, even Booth, every year. It's a good way to collect extra draft picks.

Are you sure about that?

I definitely remember reading later that evening that the Leafs did in fact retain salary, but, I'm having trouble finding proof.

Franson.

Doesn't look like they did.

So as the Leafs look to dismantle a high-priced core, the ability to either retain salary (which they didn't do with Franson and Santorelli)

Do Pittsburgh have a second round pick this year? Or was that traded already (Perron?)?

They have their 2nd, but have traded away their 1st and 3rd. So I'm guessing they really didn't want to have to sit out the first 3 rounds.

With the Leafs doing the Pens a solid by retaining salary and taking on Sill I think they should have probably been able to get a little extra out of the deal. Even a 6th or 7th round pick thrown in, I mentioned in the other thread how it's important to get as many picks as possible even late ones. But oh well.

LeBrun says the Leafs are actually interested in seeing what Sill has to offer down the stretch, so, they obviously felt there was value there. Also, helps let them keep younger guys with the Marlies instead of bringing them up to fill roster spots.

I think that may have been a factor in how they were able to snag the 4th.

Recouping draft picks and doing it with pending UFA assets in a non-playoff year is a nice change.  It's a pretty solid return on Winnik overall.  It also pretty much takes away one of the last few guys who has given a quality effort all year.  It's a huge blow to the PK certainly.

Free assets for a UFA.  Brilliant.

Makes you wonder where we could have been had we been more proactive about Raymond & Kulemin last year.  I understand that we were in a playoff spot at the time ... but it should have been a sign or trade decision with those two non-core type players.

Zach Sill...

Been awarded hardest hitter, hardest worker, best defensive forward in his minor league years. Not a point producer, but a good worker bee. Maybe his effort will rub off on some of the other guys, either with the Marlies or the Leafs.

Please stop making sense. ;)

So the NHL moved the trade deadline to today?

Whatever happened to "we're going to wait until the deadline to get the best deal"?

I guess the second rounder is okay but it means waiting until 2016 unless we can trade it as part of a package. The fourth rounder is meh (we aren't the Red Wings when it comes to later round picks) unless we can package it.

As for the player (who dat?) Marlies material I suppose.

Count me as largely unimpressed other than it beats what we got for Kuleman & Raymond as pmrules has pointed out.

Does it strike anyone else as maybe being a touch odd that Winnik was worth a second and a fourth and Santorelli was only worth a prospect that, charitably, is about equivalent to a second? Or is this further evidence of just how unwilling teams are to part with 1st rounders and that trade was more of a package deal than we've assumed?

Well, perhaps 1st rounders are not available but the Kings just gave up a 1st round pick to Carolina so it can be done.

How much were you expecting to get for Winnik?

This was a really good trade for the Leafs, but I echo the sentiment that they should have been able to get much much more for santorelli and Franson.

Yes. A keen observer might note that one got dealt in the Franson trade as well.
