Things really haven't improved in terms of real competition ... again. USA outshoots Sweden 70-9.
Sorry to say it, but they really need to take another hard look at whether to suspend women's hockey from the Olympics until and unless the rest of world produces a least a couple of more real teams.
Should they take out every sport where 1 or 2 counties dominate? Because women's hockey isn't the only one where a couple countries get virtually all of the gold and silver medals.
Yes.
Having said that, like what? Even in this year's Holland blowout in speedskating there's no comparison.
Luge was added at the 1964 Olympics and Germany has won 75 of the 129 medals awarded for it, and 31 of the 44 gold medals. In men's and women's singles luge, a German has won 20 out of the 30 combined Olympic golds. This Olympics, Germany won gold in all 4 luge events, the 8th time they have swept it. I also read that at one point German's womens lugers had won 100 straight World Cup events.
Other sports have dominant countries, and women's hockey hasn't been an Olympic sport all that long. It's come pretty far in that time, and even this Olympics the games haven't been nearly as lopsided (in general). Much more competitive from what I've seen.
