That's not really true. In the NHL an accidental trip is only not a penalty if it occurs simultaneously to making a play on the puck.

See above.

Not sure about IIHF but in the NHL an accidental trip isn't a penalty. Knight didn't intentionally trip Wickenheiser. Wickenheiser lifted her skate and hit Knight's thigh. That's what i'm going with, weak call IMO.

I'm fine going with that then, I haven't seen the replay and I only saw the initial play in real-time.

Honestly, you could be right. It's one of those calls that could go either way. It will always get called a penalty in that situation.

Just saw this - certainly looks like the American player's skate takes Wickenheiser's feet out (and maybe even her left arm? Hard to see this angle):

Again, what in the world was she even trying to do? Another couple of strides in a straight line and she has Haley beat. Instead she changes direction to try to go around her and that happens. What a bonehead play.

The rule doesn't state that. it states 'simultaneously with a completed play'.

Anyway, looks like a trip with the gif above.

I've come to the realization that I would never be able to handle watching the Leafs win the Cup.  I hit the bloody roof during that gold medal game, what a finish.

Right and a completed play is either a legal bodycheck or a play on the puck. Do you think that in the NHL you put your stick between someone's legs and they trip over it you don't get a penalty if the Referee thinks you were going for the puck?

It looks like she was trying to get to Wickenheiser's forehand side to prevent her from protecting the puck and driving the net. Still, as you said, a bonehead play as she could have simply skated her down and gotten body position by the time she reached the blue line. The most Wickenheiser could have done with that is take a shot that likely would have been stopped.

This occurred to me, too.  A game 7 in OT would literally kill me, for sure.

LOL. I still have a hole in my basement ceiling from Salt Lake City.

I don't know how I handled the men's final OT in 2010.  I must've had a couple drinks by that point.

I wouldn?t be worried about watching the Leafs winning the Cup  8)

It still looks like contact between Knight's arm and Wickenheiser's back.  If you watch Knight's left arm the whole time, she's swinging out, then seems to bounce off, and then goes straight down to the ice.  Wickenheiser is between strides and her right leg is pushed too far forward, and down she goes.

Key word is "looks", but watch the arm and the timing from both angles.

I don't think there was any contact with the arm. Wickenheiser was finishing her stride with her right leg when the skates made contact. This caused her foot to come forward too fast which caused her left leg to stay extended. The contact also pushed Wickenheiser onto her outside edge which caused her to fall the way she did. If she stayed on her inside edge she probably could have kept her balance.

I changed my mind. Hayley dove.

It looks like a 'shove' albeit a light one, but because they were both skating and especially Wickenheiser who was in stride,  so knight's attempt to 'slow' her down resulted in what ensued.
