Figured between Rielly, Matthews and some non-Leaf related interest there might be a few people watching and wanting to comment.

Some observations from the first 12 minutes of Canada/USA:

1. Morgan Rielly might be Canada's #1 defenseman. He's getting PP time, PK time and seems to be getting as much 5v5 time as anyone.

2. Connor McDavid is good at hockey.

3. It's weird to see a #61 for Canada at this Tournament that isn't Rick Nash.

4. Matthews is also getting PP time.

Also, did Oprah attend the 2012 draft and just give every team a really good dman?

Lol, Edmonton.

Not only did they fail to draft one of those defencemen, they also traded a 1st and a 2nd round pick to acquire the only one who looks like a bust.

It's funny though. They're all good but none of them are Doughty/Ekblad level.

Matthews has looked good, skates better than I thought he did earlier in the year, perhaps he's over the back problems fully now. He has also made a couple of ridiculous passes, there has been a lot of talk about him being a shoot first guy, but he's like Kessel in that his creativity is probably underrated.

At one point he received a puck, spun and just blasted a pass about 80ft, it was like a laser tape to tape to release a teammate. Watching it I was reminded of the type of plays you see some of the top guys in the NHL make, very impressive.

Also, Kinkaid looks every bit the backup in this one. I haven't seen a lot of him, but on the Duchene goal it was weird, it felt like he set for the shot, Duchene makes a full outside inside deke and then shoots and it looked like Kinkaid didn't move from his original position, leaving the far side fairly open for a player of Duchene's level.

Sweet.

He has nothing for linemates this series, so the creativity might not shine through.

Canadian NHLers up 3-1 against Dylan Larkin/Auston Matthews and a bunch of college kids.

Yeah. It could easily be 5 or 6 to 1.

The US always has a hard time getting players to play in this tournament, goalies especially. Kinkaid/Condon. There's probably 11 better American goalies out there, and only 2 of them are still in the playoffs right now.

Then again Canada has Cam Talbot and Calvin Pickard as their goalies.

Watching him I can see why there are Kopitar comps thrown around, I get that kind of style from him when I watch him play.
