2025 Offseason Thread: Spring Cleaning

How can the league argue against it. Tavares says he is willing to take less to stay home at the end of his career. Once over in whatever capacity he decisdes to take on within the organization they pay him maybe more than what they should. How can the league prove it's wrongdoing? Does his salary even have to become public if he works as a scout, or assistant coach or GM, or something else in management etc etc?
Doesn't need to become public for the league to become aware of it. As part of team reporting for HRR, this kind of stuff gets reported to the league offices. If someone is employed as part of hockey operations, the league can find out their salary. If he takes a job with MLSE outside of hockey, he'd be fine.

That being said, the league would be awfully suspicious if a player takes an obviously below market deal only to jump right into a front office job once the contract ends. Also, you can be sure Tavares would want that in writing, so the team can't just walkaway from that part of deal after a change in management, etc. Once it's on paper, it's a violation of the CBA.

So sick of the entire year and the Marner drama that was hanging over the team and fanbase. Is it bad of me to wish the same on Edmonton fans now? For once I'd like to see another fanbase squirm as their superstar decides to play out his contract year. McDavid, make it happen.

Spezza walked into the front office right after he was done playing after a few years of vet minimum deals. I didn't hear anyone cry malfeasance.

Spezza didn't sign a multiyear deal with that as an expectation. He was clearly at the "this might be my last season" stage for each of those contracts. He didn't take a pay cut because he was promised a FO job.

Also if the league caught wind of Spezza somehow earning 10x what a typical "assistant to the GM" or whatever his original title was you can be sure they'd come down hard on the Leafs.

Really this all comes down to having any sort of handshake agreement to pay a player in his post-retirement career or offering a job to their spouse/partner in return for taking a cheap contract or anything like that is just blatant cheating and no GM (or agent for that matter) would do it.

Yup. A small amount of cap savings isn't worth the risk here.

Based on his comments at the presser today, sounds like there's a real chance that's what he's doing. Definitely did not sound like he's signing an extension in the near future.

I like the idea of Reilly Smith but everyone seems to have him in the $4-5mil range which seems pretty high for a 40 point 34-year old. Maybe he had Leafs pajamas growing up and wants a bit of security after bouncing around 4 teams in the past 3 seasons to get that AAV down.

I'm glad Bennet is off the table, if he really is. I know his playoff resume, but signing him as a UFA would surely backfire on the Leafs.
He's going to get paid too much for what he brings during the season and his playoff goal scoring is not sustainable. 20.6% shooting percentage over the last two playoffs compared to a career shooting of 10.4% during the regular season for his career and 9.4% in his previous playoffs. Happy to see him take up more of Florida's cap than he should.
